This is an expensive printer but I've delt with them before and they are wonderful. HP photosmart 1218 printer (http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/product_detail/product_detail_view.jsp?product_code=C8402A%23ABA&script_name=product.cgi)

Epson uses a totally different technology than HP in color printing. Their printers have a much superior resolution and color saturation.

I'd look at the Epson site also, though the one mentioned by KAknight is excellent too but VERY expensive and ink cartridges are also very expensive. So look at total cost of ownership rather than only the printer cost.

My experience with Epson is that they give superb results even on ordinary paper compared to HP. Try out both at Staples/CompUSA/Best Buy and judge for yourself.

I'll throw my experience with the Epson Photo Stylus 875DC in here... I'm happy with it, but the color on photos do fade if they are not properly encased after printing. Cost is probably down to < $150 nowadays. Paper and ink are decently priced so no complaints about those either.

I just bought a Canon S400sp and I'm very pleased.
Seperate ink tanks and the ability to use an optional scan head as well as the option to use photo inks for that special print.

...not to mention the ability to print t-shirt transfers and 6xA4 banners.

To recap: my vote is for the Canon S400sp.

HP all the way. Doesn't use as much ink like the rest. Heads are on the ink cartridge. Look at the 960 or 932 I think. thats my 3 cents.
