Here is an email I got from my local dial up ISP:

We do have a DSL offering in Woodstock, business SDSL (Symmetric Digital
Subscriber Line). We will be offering residential ADSL (Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line) first in the Burlington area during the fourth
quarter. It will be delivered to additional communities throughout
Vermont as demand grows and the technological infrastructure permits.

I would be happy to discuss comparative costs with you to determine
whether or not our services are comparable to those you have been quoted
on already. Bear in mind that our current DSL offering is tailored toward
business application, which should, nevertheless, not preclude you from
finding it a good option for your needs.

We thank you for your loyalty. I can be reached during the week from
8AM-5PM at the number in my signature below.

Sincerely,

Matt

What does this mean? SDSL? Differences? Cost?

SDSL vs. ADSL (http://www.dslreports.com/information/kb/sdsl/ADSL)

This is *the* site for DSL: www.dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com)

SDSL means that your download speed is the same as your upload, generally starting at 128/128 and going up from there. Bring $$$
ADSL means that your uplod speed is probaly limited to a max of 128, although your download speed can be 128, 256, 512, 768, or even more. Usually reserved for residential, it's fast, and probably cheaper than the business end.
For speed comparison, a 56k modem downloads at about 5kbps, 786ADSL at about 700kbps, and cable at about 1500kbps (those are all BITS per second).

SDSL is slower type dsl that works over longer distances. The upload and download speeds are the same. It is usually around 144kbps and cost alot, $75 or so a month.

If your in an area that doesn't get cable or DSL I would sign up for the new satellite service. I believe the URL is: www.gilat2home.com (http://www.gilat2home.com)

They were doing beta test with it, you could get a computer and satellite equipment for $600 and 6 months of service. Not sure what deal they offer if you have a computer or if they are still beta testing it.

Fastest I got with cable at a friends house was 3.8 megabits (using DAP 4) and I believe that this:

For speed comparison, a 56k modem downloads at about 5kbps, 786ADSL at about 700kbps, and cable at about 1500kbps (those are all BITS per second).

actually a 56K modem will download at 50 kilo bits a second meaning a 786 ADSL line will be about 14 times faster than a dialup.

Ok. Thanks everyone!

ADSL should be available from Verizon (not my local ISP) in 3 months or so. Guess I'll wait http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You're getting 5kilobytes/sec not bits.
