My computer only accepts DB9 serial conections, so my question is:

Can I safelly connect my external modem (DB25) through a DB9 adaptor to the 9 pin serial port?

Since I'm going down from 25 to 9 pins, will that affect the speed of my modem?

You will have no problems at all and you won't affect your speed at all.

Both are serial connections (DB25 and DB9) which means they only use two of the pins for data. If I am not misstaken only maximum of seven pins are actualy used.

Is that right ?
Only 2 to 7 pins are actually used???

Then why have 25 pin cable & conectors??

Isn't that a waste????
