I am considering using a ECS K7S5A as a inexpensive base for some Duron or Thunderbird - based office machines. Almost everything that I see on the net is positive, but two local dealers have warned me about mediocre performance and returns for crashing and so forth.

Can anyone add to my research with experinces?

Thanks
IH

OK... Sorry about beating an already dead horse.... Found a bunch of posts about the MB.....

I've decided to go and buy a test system and see if it fits our needs.

Any non-BIOS related experiences are appreciated, anyway.

Thanks!

Yeah....many of us had problems with that board. Stay away from it!!!!!

And many of us have had great experiences with this board... buy it!!!

No, I wouldn't just recommend anything unconditionally. But personally it's been stable, even slightly overclockable, with great performance for a ludicrously low price for me.

Just the same advice I would give anyone looking at this board, make sure you have a high quality power supply for it.

Okay to last guy. I am looking to use Enlight 300W cases.... Good enough?

Hehe I'm setting it up now, and I'm already questioning a bit.... Can't find where to adjust settings... It's reading a TBird 950 as a 650. :P

I think there is a post somwhere in this area that relates.

..... * goes off to find it *

Thanks!

Yea IronHawk, the mobo defaults to a safemode after the cmos clear is reset. The multiplier is fixed , just set the fsb/memory timing accordingly and restart.
BTW, mine is doin great. Generic P/S ,orig. bios and all. Maybe you'll be lucky too.:p

Hi,

Just wanted to add that I am also using this board and so far I am very OK with it. I have to admit that I was not able to overclock it (well if you count 824MHz on 800 MHz Duron) but otherwise no problem at all, very stable and fast. I also have flashed BIOS on it alredy twice - so far so good (knocking on wood ;-)).
By the way, overclockers BIOS 010911 is the best so far even at standard settings (100/100) - memory is the fastest with this one.

Very cool, ppl. It set up well, once I figured out the battery low thing. Set it up to dual-boot W2000 and W98. Very fast, stable so far.... I like it a lot!!!

BTW, a store that has sold 100 of the boards in the last few months and got none returned, majorly recommends the Enlight PSU's. Apparently everyone else in the city has had a lot of the boards returned for mysterious ailments, but not these guys.

Also make sure the processor is running cool.

Now i want to upgrade my sys at home!!

Sorry it took so long to update.

Just an update.

Our Tech Support gentleman has been testing the system out for about a week now, with no major complaints. I am intoxicated by the success.

No BIOS flashes yet, no random stoppages.

The only problem so far is if one document in Word 2000 is altered in a certain way, it crashes Word. This was solved by merely separating thae looooong file into two halves.

Am bargaining for 5 more mobos from my vendors..... So cool!! Thanks for the input, everyone.

MB:cool: :)
