Dear Fellow Posters:

Want a free computer? Or at least s computer part? Come to Manhattan, the Core of the Big Apple.

Things discarded are picked up every Saturday so people in well-to-do ares put out their old stuff on Friday nite.
Now ,you might think this is junk--nah!

When I lived near Columbia University , could furnish apt ..come to think of it...near did.

In wealthy nabes, people discard a 17" monitor to get a 19" and because rents are like $2000 for a dumpy studio, they get rid of "old" to save space.

Problem is getting the stuff home. Parking cost like $450 plus 18% tax and insanity does not run in my family so need taxi.

"Is this whatever worth it?" , you ask. Ah! the agony of discarded computers!

You'd think they'd at least pull the hard drive and deep six it but not always--this amazes me. Lots of people don't even know how to open up a case. Believe it or not , I've rarely seen one that 's been stripped.

Even old stuff can have goodies: I took home a '97 machine in the hope of pulling EDO ram, got FP instead--and worthy SW.

P.S. Check out the self-storage facilities where you live. People store stuff. move and discard this and that.

Mega, you and I think alike..

I posted a thread a year ago about "Dumpster Diving" where members related what they'd been given or found discarded.

This is the best method of recycling as few resources are utilized returning an otherwise landfill burden,, to useful operation again.

BTW, pay no attention to RustyGL, his medication has expired and his mom's been feeding him sugar pills,, JK :)

I was just dumpster diving the other day at my favorite target and got a perfectly good UPS, a SCSI CDROM drive, and a SCSI DAT drive, all with cables.

PS - the UPS is now powering my tower and monitor. The only problem that it has is that the power light flickers, but the output is dead stable and clean, even on the batteries.

You could just put an ad in ebay 'pile-o-stuff'. Once the bids are done, stop by with a big box, throwe the stuff in, tape it up and put label on it (a pile near a UPS station would be perfect):D

Dear Cadetskimpy,

Hey, this is the second of your replies If replied to in the last 15 secs.!

My interest here are technological, theoretical (learning not only construction but more importantly ,Logical Architecture of computers, and also to save money on sometimes surorisingly good stuff.

One computer I found had Office Suite Pro the very day my girlfriend told me she needed to learn Power Point and Excel for a job!

Another poster mentioned what sounded like a philothropic use but regretable hyperlink or whatever didn't show up. [Please repost __Thank You]. Been meaning to contact him.

Still, I got a lot of stuff I'd like to get rid of like one of those pseudo-"windowless" air-conditioners you have to put water into. so maybe E-bay I go!

Hey, vote on the NAFTO I invented!

Thanks again
