I'm searching for the best laptop computer I can get for the best price. I'll be leasing this computer for a monthly rate, and I'll also be getting it off the net. Now I've limited my choices down to an IBM thinkpad i series or x series, or a Dell Inspiron/Latitude, or possibly a gateway or Compaq.
I'd like atleast a Celeron 500 CPU, 12.1 in. screen, 64MB RAM, 6GB HD, CD-ROM, 3.5 in. Diskette, 4MB+ vid. card, 16bit+ sound card, internal modem 56K, and I'd like to lease for under $45/month.
So if anyone has any links to a computer that would fit my needs, or has any suggestions, I welcome them, I plan on getting the puter within 2-weeks, so Please rush those comments in ASAP.
Thanks

I reccomend you go with Dell. Also an Inspirion, not a Latitude. Not that Latitudes are not reliable, etc. They are just not for your situation. (For big travellers, people who need a lot of power and want to spend more money..)
I've got a setup here with a configuration to best suit what I gathered was your situation.

No problem. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Its a Dell notebook.
You can speed right over to Dell's website.
http://www.dell.com/
- Click on Home/Home Office
- Click on "Notebooks"
- Under "Inspiron 3800" select "Customize and Price".
Modify the options to the ones I specified above. You can change them, but that will alter the price.
This will enable you to order directly online. You can also just submit the request, so that they will call you for your credit card info, etc.
Have a nice day. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I think the Thinkpads( http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ) are waaaaay over priced! I have the A20 for school and after taxes, it cost me $3700 Canadian, about $2400US. NOT worth it. It's as loaded as it could have been when I ordered it. It's a P3500, 6gig, 128ram, 24X CD(replaced twice already), ati mobile rage(something like that, it runs Quake AND UT so it's gotta be good!), a floppy, modem and network card. Heck, I didn't even get a case. For $1600US, I could have got a Toshiba Satelite with the same specs!

The dells seem pretty nice, but the prices are a little too high, I'm looking to spend only $30-40/month So the total price has to be under $2000, The IBM, i-series seem pretty reasonable, I would appreciate more suggestions, Thanks
One more thing...If I choose to lease the laptop, can I decide that after 12 months I don't want 2 use it anymore and just turn the puter back in, or do I have to pay monthly for the full 48 months??
I've never leased a computer that's why I'm asking.
Once again, thanks

jadison, No you cannot just decide you don't want it. Its yours and you must continue the payments unless there is a problem with it.
Your not paying a monthly fee based on a lease like you are paying monthly for your internet access. It doesn't work that way. Leasing a computer really just spreads the payments WAAY out. So instead of making a quick transaction, you're paying small fees for four years.
You said initially that you want to lease for under $45 per month. So, I customized a specific model to suit that price.
I'll head over to Dell again, and get you one that is between $30 and $40 per month.
Personally, I wouldn't reccomend leasing a computer. I wouldn't do it. I also wouldn't lease a car - but thats my own personal opinion.

Here's a setup I found :
Dell Inspiron 3800
-Intel Celeron 600Mhz Processor
-Windows Millenium Edition with Norton AV
-6GB Hard Drive
-64MB SDRAM
-Internal 56K Modem
-12.1" Display
-4 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
-24x Max Variable CD-Rom Drive
-Modular Floppy Drive
-1 Year Warranty
-MS Works Suite 2000 with Money 2000 Financing Software
-Nylon Carrying Case
You can get this for $40 per month. You can get this for $38 per month if you downgrade to 5GB hard drive.
If you want to purchase this system, its $1478. Its $1399 if you downgrade to a 5GB hard drive.

Hey brandon,
thanks a lot for your help, I apologize for changing my price preference, and also I figured that once u sign that leasing contract you are required to pay all of the monthly payments. So my next question is, how do I pay low monthly payments for a laptop computer for a period of time that I can customize? I wanted to use a laptop for school, work, and home starting now until the end of the school year (May, 2001). I didn't want to be contracted for a 24, 36, or even 48 month period.
If none of the above is possible I may as well just buy a few more computer parts for my low-grade desktop over the net. That was going to be my initial choice, then I thought that leasing a laptop for a year would be better. Seems that's not possible
Any more info. would be appreciated, thanks

12 months? No.
24 months? Maybe.
36 or 48 months - Yes.
That is one of the reasons I don't like leasing. You are paying forrrrever...
