1- what goes on what cable together
2- what is master
3- what is slave

2 40 gig hard drives
1 cdrw
1 dvd

i want to be able to add these things to my system

epox 8kta3
thunderbird 1.mhz
ibm 40gig hard drive(2)
plextor cdrw
samsung dvd

You can put two IDE drives (HDs or optical drives) on one IDE cable. One must be configured as "master" and the other must be configured as "slave". There are jumpers on the drive that you use to set whether the drive is master or slave.

Most motherboard have two IDE connectors, allowing up to 4 IDE drives.

The rule of thumb:
C- Drive Primary Master
Burner Secondary Master
DVD Primary Slave
Second HD Secondary Slave

If the above is done with an ATA66/100 hard disk, the burner would reduce the speed to it's max transfer rate, right?

I have mine set up as follows

C drive = Pimary Master
2nd HD = Secondary Master
CD burner = Primary Slave
DVD = Seconday Slave

thank you for the help. i am going to get another hard drive at the end of the month.

i already have the cdrw and dvd drive.

do i have to partition the second drive like i did with the first hard drive?

do i have to put an operating system on the second hard drive?

You will have to partition it, but you will not need to install anything else..
