October 19th will bw a big day for ECCP!

EDIT > The date for Sysopt has been changed to October 22! Do your dumps between the Noon and 6PM updates if possible!

The Dutch Power Cows will be doing a Mega-Flush in honor of opening their new website.

As most of you know, I've been saving up for a flush of my own:) and that 's the same day I had planned for. So it looks like there will be a little "Power" competition on the 19th, The Dutch Power Cows against Sysopt:D IF anyone else has been saving up for this event, I plan on dumping between the Noon and 6PM updates, you are all welcome to participate!

Let's see where the power lies...Sysopt or the DPC!

I have a friend that works for me and he hasn't flushed yet for a few weeks, I thought maybe he forgot to run the program , but it runs 24/7 ! I notified him to keep them until 19.

:)

Gotta go hunting for more power...

I would like you to think about holding off dumping them until the 20th. If both DPC and Sysopt dump a large amount of DPs on the same day It could bring down the ND server.

If you happen to reach the DP limit for any of the IPs that you are using. The clients on those IPs will continue to keep trying to send its DPs. This will cause a DOS attack against the ND server. If the clients have a large number of DPs that they are trying to send. It will eat up a lot of bandwidth.

Back when I first setup my DP server and Randy's 1000+ dump put me over my limit. It was serverly overloading my server and it would have taken it down if I had not been around and started blocking IPs. It had also loaded down the ND server. I remember Chris commenting, later on that day, on a high server load.

Now imagine what would happen if more then 1 person reached their limit. Taking the server down and having the sys admins take notice and block all traffic in order to get the server back up. This kind of upset could mean the end of the free use of ND equipment. :(

What really bother me. Is that the DPC members know what mega-dumping will do to the project servers. Yet they insist on practicing it even after being warned against it. I could accept having members dump over a weeks time, but having all members dump at once is really asking for trouble. I hope they **** off Chris and he starts blocking their IPs.

My e-mail to Chris and his response:

Hi Randy,

>#1 prttybean, a member of the Sysopt Team shows up on the "Team's Stats" at
number 55. prttybean :
310 22 (0.076851%)
>
>Under All Users, this member is not listed! Could you check it out please?

I think that must have been a fluke; `prttybean' seems to be listed under
all users now as well:

590. prttybean : 355 25
(0.010432%)[98.693646%]

>#2 Is there a problem with "Mega Flushes?" In about two weeks or so, I am
considering dumping about 50K worth of DP's ( 10 sets of 5K or less, each from
a different IP address) during the same 6 hour period. Will that be a problem?
Gotta show the Dutch Power Cows who has the most
>"power" lol!

Nice! No, it shouldn't be a problem. I did recompile the CGI to accept upto
50000 DP (or 50000*200 bytes, whichever is smaller) per IP. So 5K from one IP
shouldn't be a problem.
50K is pretty impressive. What's the max `Mega-flush' upto now, anyway?

Cheers,
Chris

Humm...

After i've read severall of this comments on both th TA and the SO forums, i thought, i'm going to ask Chris personally what he thinks about MegaFlushes. And as you can see in the quotes above, Chris 'doesn't have any problem with them.

And, are you so mad about us, cause you can't get us, or what's the reason. I don't like it seeing you so

Eh, Randy
What are you doing :(
You are quoting my private e-mail messages on this forum

Sorry KoW, I didn't think you would mind. I also posted the link to the thread on your forum. I don't understand what the problem is with some people and mega-flushes, it makes the contest more exciting!

I'll edit the post and only leave the link to your thread.

I just don't want to see happen to ECCp. What happened when DPC's RC5 mega-dumps disrupted stats updates and affected the project as a whole.

Since Chris has increased the the limit per IP to 50,000. A client DOS attack against the ND server should not occur. I am just concerned since I know the clients can turn into a severe DOS force, and I have experienced it first hand.

Randy, if you want to start using the the DP server for your regular systems. You may do so. I will see about passing a GET variable, along with the DP info, to the ND server. So that Chris can recognise StatsAholic server and up the limit for them.

I'm all for it but Virus is probably right. A mass dump of DP's could bring down the server.

Great news about the proxy Virus:) I need to know my limit:confused: In the near future, the classroom machines (about 221 of them) will be re-imaged to W2K and I will be reloading them with the client...all for ECCP:D I'm guessing 8-9K per day:eek: I won't be doing RC5 with them anymore, although I will leave a machine or two on RC5 as support for the team.

Let me know what you think your ECCP server will handle and I won't exceed it!

Also, maybe you're right about the mega-flush. I had been planning on the 19th for about two weeks and saw this morning where the DPC are also planning for that day. I guess I could hold off until Monday the 22nd, that would give me an extra 4-5K to add to the flush:D

Anyone else have a suggestion on a date? I good for any day Monday through Friday, the weekends are out, my building is locked up tight with armed guards! With the way things have been going around here the last few weeks, I wouldn't attempt going there. Something about soldiers with loaded M-16's doesn't seem like much fun!

Anyway, everyone thing about a day that would be good, we'll have a "party" and post in all the forums and invite all of Sysopt;) (might be good for a membership drive)

Well, I know this girl... ;)

Seriously, the 22nd sounds better than the 19th...I have 2 or 3 machines running ECCP and not sending results in yet. I'll send them in on Monday too.

Edit -> no, I won't have anything additional on the 22nd :(

I will only have two usable IPs in the near future. So that would be a max of 100,000 per day. If I could get Chris to modify his code to recognize a passed 'proxy=1' variable. Then my limit could be much higher.

As for my hardware limit. I will be upgrading my main system to a AthlonXP 1.4 Ghz in a month or so. So my old duron 650 will be thrown in the server. I should have 512-768Mb of ram available for it also.

It's hardware upgrade season for me. I just ordered another 40Gb drive that will give me a total 95Gb between my three computers. :)

The 22nd is fine by me. That will be a full 4 weeks of school crunching for me.

It might be best to be sure if we are using UTC or Central Time US (Notre Dame's time zone) which is UTC -5

Oops,

I didn't mean it that way.
But i did not think about the spy's :p when i posted that message on the DPC forum.
Otherwise i would have sensured the MegaFlush date parts.
So it's not a problem that you qoute from my posts.
I simply was so stupid to forget you are spying all DPC posts.
(And if i post them in English it's even more simple for you ;) )

OK, from the few that posted, it looks like the 22nd it will be. I'll start flushing right after the noon update, hopefully I'll be done by 1:30 for an appointment. If not, I'll move the files to disk and dump them from home where another large batch will be waiting for a "one way trip":D

Can't wait unitil the 6PM update to see what happens:D

For this Flush...Send the DP's under your own name and e-mail, I will have plenty for myself:D This is a team thing...not for me!

Also, I dropped a thread on Gen Tech and Sysopt Comm inviting all of Sysopt to come to our Mega-Flush Party and also asking them to participate!

Lend a hand and add your own threads, and lets see if we can't get at least 50 new people to join the party! Remember, there are about 15 Forums on this site, if you frequent any of them, post an invitation to the party;)

Lets ROCK this place and when we pass TA on the 22nd, let's do it with style:) We'll pass them so hard and fast, their heads will spin and they'll start heading down the chart instead of up it!

Majority of my DPs come from diskless nodes. Since we don't have a DP server yet, I will pass on saving for Oct. 22. If a power failure was to occur I would lose too many DPs. The risk is too great.

Unless perhaps, Virus can quickly implement a save of my DPs on his Statsaholic server, then release them on Oct. 22nd. He has my permission.

Randy,
Now you are doing good.
This is the way you should pass a team. ;)

RC,
You're dplist will not crash after a power failure.
The program opens the file only when a DP is found, and it is closed directly after that.

And, PS. Our ECCp proxy has a save option :D

Kow, After a power failure I would not have a dplist. The machines are diskless. :)

Kow, best of luck to you on your Oct. 20th flush :) :)

Randy, I think he was refering to the stats for mega dumps on Kows server. The biggest is like 30k than your 19k dump. Dete

That's nothing, I'll more then double their highest on the 22nd:D

I'm guesstamating about 70K+;)
