I was referred here to try to find someone who can help. I have windows 98 on a HP Pavilion desktop. My isp connection details should show PPP and TCP/IP. Instead, they show challenge handshake authentication protocol and TCP/IP. 4 hours and 3 tech support centers have been unable to help. can you??????

Are you connected to the net with a dial up or broadband?
The thing to try would be to remove all devices that connect to the internet, reinstall them and reestablish the proper protocols, even to the point of physically removing the device from the computer.Start in the device manager and remove modem,NIC.Shut down and remove them from the computer. Restart into safe ,go to device mang.,and remove any trace of them.Re install the physical modem,NIC .Start up and let windows install the device(PNP) and make sure the proper drivers are installed. Then redefine your internet protocol either in Control Panel- network neighborhood or modem dial up network. Try that.

this doesn't make sense to me about 5 times over. to be able to view those details you must have connected, so what's the problem? unable to browse? second of all, CHAP is an authentication protocol.... PPP is connection type. i've never heard of CHAP appearing there let alone seen it.
to set PPP as the connection type go to my comp-> dial-up networking-> right-click on the dialer-> properties-> server types (tab) -> type of dial-up server-> select 'PPP: internet.... etc.'
if that doesn't help try telling us what the problem is.
