I have a hard drive with SCSI-2 Narrow Interface and I want to buy a card that can control it. I have heard that some interfaces are backware compatable with other interfaces. I am also not sure how to hook up an SCSI system. So if anyone could give me a quick explanation it would be appreciated. This is what I have figured so far but I do not know if it is right:

SCSI Controller
--------------------
|
|
|
0<-SCSI 50-pin connector
| <---SCSI ribbon cable
|
0<-SCSI 50-pin connector
|

----------------
Terminator

Please correct me if this is wrong.

Nice ASCII art :). It looks correct to me.

The terminator is often built into SCSI hard drives. You can activate it using a jumer if necessary.

If you have no intention of buying any faster scsi drives, then just buy a fast scsi interface. If you plan on booting from this HD, then you'll need a one with a BIOS. Also make sure the card comes with an internal connector if you're using an internal HD. Some SCSI cards only come with an external connector, and some come with both internal and external.

There's no need to spend hundreds on the latest Ultra160 SCSI adapter. I purchased a SIIG AP-20 UltraSCSI adapter to use with a scanner and an old fast SCSI HD like yours. Fry's had them on sale for $39. I had to slow down the ultra scsi card to fast scsi speed in order to get the HD to work. Other than that, I didn't experience any problems setting it up. Win98SE autodetected everything without any problems and it runs like a champ.
