What defraggin program does everybody recommend?
I suspect windows defrag does nothing but pack everything the the front and shuffle clusters around to make a pretty screensaver.

Welcome to SysOpt!

I prefer Norton Speed Disk.
Speed Disk has the option of optimizing the swap file, which defragments it, and moves it to the front of the disk. It’s relatively quick also.
Windows ME has a better defragmenter than that of Win 98 (faster) and it can be copied from an ME machine and renamed Defrag.exe, then overwrite the Win98 file of that name.

Agree with MaxVal

It works well. moving the fixed swap file to fastest part of the drive helps.

I also use Norton Speed disk, but it costs money, Defrag is already included with win9x,ME etc. I have ran both at random times & ran Winstone99 & there is no change whatsoever in results. To get speed disk, you must buy Norton Utilities which also comes with a host of other good programs. If all you want to do is just defrag the disk, I would recommend defrag.

used norton speeddisk in DOS days...

Anyway, normal winders defag works fine. There have been many excellet links to descibe this process. Simply, boot to safe mode and then run defrag.

Go to Settings... and check the box to make the programs start faster. This has clipped up tp 30 seconds off the boot time, imhe.

I prefer Executive Software's Diskeeper (http://www.execsoft.com/diskeeper/about/diskeeper.asp)... Has some very useful features!

Norton Speed Disk gets my vote for the swap file move and speed.

Just wanted to add a little-known fact... if you look closely at Win 9.xx defrag utility you will see that it is actually licenced from Symantic (Norton's parent company). It's a "Lite" version of Speed Disk basically. This is also true for defrag in Win 3.xx which is where I discovered this.

If you don't want to purchase Norton Utilities you could install the demo and defrag/optimize the swap file. If you've created a permanant swap file, when the demo runs out and you're back to using Windows defrag it will continue to keep the swap file at the front of the disk (I tested it once) so long as you don't change swap file settings/size, etc.
