Nemesis1s, your low score is primarily attributed to your MX video card. They are the pits because of their limited memory bandwidths. One of my machines is a Pentium III-500@575 and scores a 4078 with an overclocked GeForce 3 card. Here's a URL to take a look at some numbers for this particular rig. http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=2513623
Its amazing how much of a difference a high end gpu versus a lower model makes in terms of benchmarks and fast gaming. Depending on what kinds of games you play, you could probably stick it out with your PIII-700MHz processor. But if you like to have high benchmarks and astronomical frame rates in first person shooters, you'll need to upgrade your processor, video card, memory type and your mobo. Ah well...its all a game to me. Cheers!

Thats farenheight (SP?) not celcius, and try using Win 98 not 2K or XP.
Have you ever checked into using a peltier or a shim or both? I can lower my temp on the coolant but I can't dissapate any more heat with the limited contact surface from the processor to the heat sink.

The video card is old? The stoopid Intel board can't be overclocked and only takes SDRAM? Where's the worst bottleneck in this? Any obvious tweaks I can do?
(it's my first crack at 3dmark & I'm 5x slower than equivalent?!?).

Video card is your biggest problem by far, then the speed of your RAM.
Tweaks- Update drivers, defrag, make sure you have no hardware errors in device manager.

Thanks Gibsinep,
Believe it or not that was with a clean system.
I've sinced messed with the card a bit (found an ice overclocking program) and I've squeezed it up to 2970. She's running a bit hot, but no instability issues seem to show and the frame rates went up quite a bit.
I'm tempted to push this card hard. If it breaks I'll have to buy a new one;)

Yeah, you're right on the money that your memory is holding you back as well as your GeForce 256. Why is that you can't overclock the Intel board by pushing your fsb up? That's cool you can overclock your video card though. You might consider popping off the stock fan from your GeForce and using a better cooler like the Blue Orb. Also, consider putting on some RAM sinks for your memory. All of this will help cool your card if it seems to be running hot for you.
Take a look at Thermaltake's Blue Orb (http://www.thermaltake.com/products/chipset/crystalOrb.htm) and ram sinks (http://www.thermaltake.com/products/memory/hddr01.htm).
Heh. Try not to break your old video card since it would be nice to have a backup. Or for spare parts for when you begin upgrading your main rig.

06-18-2002, 02:11 PM
Thanks for the info. Good stuff. If I try and push the GF256 any higher I'll get some hardware for it.

It's an Intel 845WN mb. The bios is dumbed down (no access to fsb, voltage or anything interesting). Intel mentioned that there was a jumper to go into bios repair mode, but all this does is reset the bios password.
As near as I can tell, you can't overclock this intel board whatsoever?
I'd be exstatic if you told me otherwise....

Can't help you there tking. I went digging around and it looks like the Intel motherboard you have doesn't allow for fsb overclocking. :(
The best thing that you can do in terms of adjusting your BIOS is to switch to a more aggressive memory timings (Cas2) and see if there's no problems. If you already haven't done so. However, all is not lost. There may still be hope for you. Take a look at CPUCool by Podien as this program might support your PLL IC. Read about it here (http://www.podien.de/FSB.HTM).
The only other thing left to improve your 3dMark scores is to get one of the latest video cards. 3dMark2001SE is heavily dependent on the video card and less on the processor.

It's nice to support a one man concern like Podien. If anyone is interested in overclocking and they are at a dead end, visit the website, try it out ... and support the guy!

Heh! Glad to hear that CPUCool could help you out. I looked into it way back but the program still doesn't support the PLL IC for my old Dell Dimension. :( But at least Podien has another satisfied customer. tking, be sure to send him an email. He likes feedback especially when it comes along with money! ;) Heck, its only $13-$15 US so its worth it in exchange for squeezing out a little more performance.

You're right in the "normal" range x-rewt. Have you tried ATI's new CATALYST drivers yet for your Radeon 8500? You can find them here (http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html). I just downloaded the drivers for my Radeon 7200 in a third pc.
Also, is your 3dMark2001 score on an overclocked Duron, overclocked Radeon? I hit 6553 with my Duron 1Ghz@1.24, oc'ed GeForce3 (235/530) and ASUS A7V133a mobo (8.5x multplier, 146 fsb). I suspect that I'd get scores in the 6200s though if I dropped everything to stock.

They suck, i get about 100 lower with the latest drivers, nothing overclocked..if i rase my memory by 33mhz..the score is about 6400, I´m still whaiting for my cpu faan (delta 80mm 80cfm) and some artiv silver3 and a crystal orb.

The thing that is giving the good score (for an older computer) is the Geforce 256. This really is a good card for slower computers.

I just pegged my 8500 at 300/300 for a test and it worked fine (stable for many hours of constant running). Could it be a heat issue in your case?
I'm thinking I can run it up to maybe 325 before more exotic cooling will be required (but then I'm running a non-o/clocked P4, so heat is less of an issue).

Wanna ask stupid question here:
Will adding more RAM will increase the 3DMARK score? From what i know , it would not. i have test using 128, 256, 512 RDRAM(i am using rdram now)..the 3dmark score doesn't make any difference..

AGP 1x: 66MHz clock, Bandwidth: 266Mb/s
AGP 2x: 66MHz clock, Bandwidth: 533MB/s
AGP 4x: 66MHz clock, Bandwidth: 1066MB/s

Beard,
I suspect you're using a different detonator driver than me. 29.42 works very well, and I was getting ~9400 each time at default settings.
There are a few things to check.
1. See if you're using 'performance' or 'quality' settings. IMHO, your score reflects Quality settings, at least my scores were nearly the same in Quality mode.
2. Which driver version are you using?
3. tweak your bios if you haven't already.
4. don't load junk at startup if you REALLY don't have to.
Check these things. If you're willing to share your 3dmark score, please do. Just go back to your post and edit it by inserting the url.

How can i find out if i have support for 4x APG and whether or not its working?
beeblquix i have detonator 6.13.10.3000, BIOS V. 4.25.00.30
Image quality was not on. its the default settings...
i have DX8.1 (4.08.01.0881) under win2k.
Something wierd is happening.
I ran my PIV2Ghz@2.33 alongside my PIII@900Mhz:
PIII with Inno3d Geforce 4 Ti 4200,
and the PIV with Gainward Geforce 4 Ti 4200
both systems have 256Mb RAM and same DX version.
anyway, i suppose this test was silly because the PIII has the default 28.90 drivers and 4.25.00.28 BIOS and the PIV has the 30.00's and ....30 BIOS but the PIV struggled in the Dragothic, Nature, and vertex/pixel/sprites/high polycount. everything else was about twice as fast as the PIII, but where it struggled was about half the speed of the PIII and very jerky.
overall scores were about 8900 for the PIV, and 7800 for the PIII.
surely there should be a bigger difference than this!!
I am quite impressed with the cheapest GF4Ti4200 i could find (the inno3d one! it comes with a sh*t game and some demos that dont work, but atleast they tried :) plus the box is nice)
i have just noticed this:
PIII says BUS MODE: AGP
PIV says BUS MODE: AGP (PCI MODE)
also dxdiag says my AGP texture acceleration can not be enabled on the PIV unlike on the PIII.
the PIV is win2k and the PIII is win98SE.
why are there so many stupid variables!
anyway what's all this mean and how might i improve things on the PIV? please? this is bugging me!

Locopinoy,
You could do better with some tweaks. Comparing to my own system, I'm attaining ~9400 in 2k1seBuild330(that's the lastest patch) without overclocking but using a few performance tweaks, and over 10k when overclocking using default 3dmark settings. Your 2200+ & 4400 should OWN my 1700+ & 4200, but you really don't.
for higher marks:
1) use performance settings instead of quality in your detonators
2) increase memory timings in the bios to CAS2 (the lower the better)
3) when I switched the cpu detect from AUTOMATIC to MANUAL in the bios, I instantly got a tiny boost in cpu spped (1466 TO 1479Mhz). I therize that because the Asus standard is to *slightly* overclock the FSB, releasing the cpu from being stuck at 1466 and allowing the muliplyer and fsb to combine to what it does gives a nice little tweak which is borderline fsb overclocking but not truly. Heck, I take what I can get. :)
4) setting your bios settings to OPTIMAL if you have the option will set things like memory interleave, fast writes, etc to a faster setting.
That's as much as I can say for now, 'cept that your system has the potential to get over 11k.
cheers,

Go for broke, but dont break anything. Shoot for 12Ks. I just got into this stuff when I got my new computer. Overclocking I was able to get:
11078 3dmarks with a GA-7VRXP, Athlon 2200+, 512MB 2700 DDR333 and a MSI ti4400.
I found that proper cooling makes a lot of difference (I first used 3dmark when a heat wave swept through Ca.) WIth a 4600 you can OC that card of yours to around 315/720 core/mem. I've given up goin for high 3d marks, I just want stability and crisp graphics. My computer runs all the programs I've tossed at it with no problem, so I feel over clocking is not necessary.
I've yet to try using 1t command rate because its unstable with my current bios version, mobo and memory setup and also the clock ratio which is on auto because I have to mess with dipswitches. Can anyone tell me how much of a differnce I might see if i fiddled with these two variables?
Edit: Whatabout adjusting AGP and DDR voltage?

My GF4 Ti4200 got well over 10,000 3DMark 2000 points.. but that is with an AMD system... hmmm....
also, put the GF4 into the P3 system and benchmark it.. you may get better results still!

PDXracer - your score seems to be lower than mine, and i thought that a P4 2.0 GHz would out do me even... (Athlon XP 1700+ @ 1900+) but then i guess your SDRAm will be holding you back. Tweak your DirectX settings a little, and tighten you memory settings. Also, clock the Geforce4 up a little, I can get my Leadtek Geforce4 Ti 4200 64mb to 310MHz core and 570MHz RAM so far (I am still going up, but i test for a number of days for stability issues.. also am gonna replace theal paste on card with Arctic Silver 3 :x :D) I would like to see that an expensive system like that do atlest 9000 3DMarks... as i think with a little tweaking you can get another 600 points or so..

Oh dear - newbie alert.... as you have an Nvidia card you which use DETONATOR drivers, you should be able to use rivatuner with your drivers supplied with the card (which will be waaay outta date by now) anyways... if not get the detonator drivers from www.nvidia.com and install those then use em. Any Nvidia card can be optimised via Rvatuner - you have an Nvidia Card made under liscence by Creative, it will run dets and is the same (more or less) as all other nvidia cards of that type...

Go up in 5mhz increments and run a test, run 3d mark - play a 5 min quake 3 game etc, then come out and bump up another 5mhz and so on and so on - repeat until you start to notice graphical errors etc then drop back say 10Mhz :)
Do this for both RAM and Core (although i wouldnt reccomend pushing core too hard as its the most liable to pack in)... tell us how you get on and dont forget to post your new benches :)

1QUESTION!!!
whats really:
CORE:
and
MEMORY:
What effect's speed the most??
Bigjakkstaffa
08-23-2002, 05:47 PM
Both affect spped - although you'd prolly be best off just fiddling the memory speed as it is difficult to cause damage by o/c'ing memory and you only see marginal gains by o/c'ing core unless you do so by say 50mhz. I increased my gf4 ti4200 ram from 513mhz to 600 which pushed me from about 8500 3d marks to 9000 ish, although i wouldnt really reccomend you push by 100mhz.
What id say is o/c the RAM first, until you get graphical errors etc, like i mentioned in the previous post, then drop back the 10mhz, then o/c the core by no more than say 25mhz if you want to be safe, you should see a few 100 marks in 3dmark 2001 by doing that :)

The only way im aware of to monitor your gfx card temps is to get some form of thermostat and place it on the card while running and take your readings manually. Heat wise you cant really kill a card, as once you reach the graphical artifacts etc you know your coming up high heat levels, so you just drop it back and you should be okay....
--Jakk:t
Bigjakkstaffa
08-23-2002, 06:16 PM
Ive o'ced at least 3 of my own gfx and never had any temp readouts - as short of using manual temp reading kit you cant, really ITS NOT A BIG ISSUE -- LET IT GO, your card willl let you knwo when youve reached your limit via graphics tearing etc, just drop back down a few mhz into a comfort zone

I got just over 4000 with a completely stock setup: AMD XP 1800+, ECS K7S5A mobo, 256MB DDR-2100, GeForce 2 Ti 64MB DDR.
Now, when I O/C the 1800 to 2100-levels, I get just over 5000 at stock 3DMark2001SE settings and stock video card settings.
When I take RivaTuner to the GeForce 2, and although the Pine Ge2 runs at 225 core when the book clearly states a 250MHz GPU, and set it to 250/450, I get an increase to about 5200 3DMarks. Taking the card to 265/475 gets me to 5359, and after that I start getting artifacts in my games.
For now the card is back to stock, and because of weird boot issues the XP 1800 is only turned up to 1900 levels. Haven't 3DMarked it yet, but I expect 46-4800 or so.

Anyroad, I got to tell you all this, might help some poor beggar and if not should show up my ignorance delightfully.
Today is the first dat in four months that I have managed to run 3d2001. I installed XP and have not been able to run abenchmark since, I usually manage to get the two car section and then oops, max crappout. But then, God bless himBIPOLARBILL mentioned on another thread he would only confidently recommend 23.11 drivers for XP because he knew for sure that they worked well. So today, after a mega uninstall of everything NV, I put 23.11 back on again. And i can now state that I have a 3d mark score of
3080 I say again 3080
Oh God, you don't know what this means to me, I've underclocked, took all my mem sticks out, stuck more fans in the case than you get at an Arsenal match, raised the voltage to brown out levels and even contacted tech support at MadOnion, who did reply but couldn't help specificly. congratulations, nothing worse than a comp that wont benchmark:( that is a very good score i think for that card, i had a duron 800 with roughly same card, i was getting only 2400, but a friend has that same card with faster processor, and he is not getting much more than i did.....:( i red here about should only benchmark it after reboot, so i did that, and turned zonealarm off and got nearly another 100 points more:D I have a question though.......do most people run their benchmarks at settings they dont run their comp at all day, like i hear of guys cranking video card right up, artifacts galore and all that, just to get the big scores....lol, or turning res down and only running the games only etc. me personally, i think the benchmark should be run at default settings, full test and at what you actually use the comp at all day, just my opinion, not that anyone really cares.....lmao http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=4425502

Couldn't hurt. My Gainward Ti 4200 "Golden Sample" came with heatsinks on front and back of the card on all the memory. It comes default clocked in the 270/550 range IIRC with many folks saying they have taken it to the 320/600+ range. That said, they only gained a hundered or so 3D marks, which probably wouldn't be noticable in gaming. If you're going for "brag factor" then do it, if not, maybe not needed.

Its actually overclocked to 1710MHz but i still think its low. Athlons are alot faster than equvilantly clocked P4s and of course score alot better still i was expecting someting in the mid 5000's. Another thing, do you know what kind of a difference FastWrites would make on performance? In "chipset info" in WCPUID it detects my card as the VGA device but in the menu where it shows what features are enabled all those options are greyed out. In the C433 this did not happen, is this a problem and if so how can i fix it? BTW. I am running nVidia 30.82 drivers (happened with 29.42 aswell). One more thing, i know athlons support 3DNow! What is it?

3d now is their own instruction set for the processor.
Your score is rather low, I have a g2mx400 that hits 3000 with no overclocking on a 1.4ghz athlon. Need to do some tweaking.:D

I noticed something today that might be the problem. On the GF3 Ti 200 tab in advanced under settings it says bus type: AGP (PCI mode). Is this why its so slow? Do i need to change some settings somewhere or install some drivers or something? I read something about a guy having to install VIA 4in1 drivers and updating the PCI-to-PCI bridge drivers to fix it. My board is an i845 though. He had a VIA chipset with an Athlon 1Ghz and went from 4700 to 6200 3D Marks after installing the drivers.
Ill have a look around.
