I'm looking to buy a new printer; it has to be fairly cheap (not too cheap though), fairly quick and it has to work with Linux and Windows.
Is there any benefit in geting a USB printer, rather than parallel?
Thanks

Hi,
most printers today give you the option USB, so if you plan to buy a new model, you'll have the USB connection.
Standards are HP and EPSON printers. EPSON have better image quality, but HP are really fast. If you plan to use it for text, go with HP. If you plan to print pictures, go with EPSON.

Ditto what Mastoura wrote. USB should run faster than parallel port, and it would be a cinch to set up, and it's hot swappable, if that matters. I think I'd go USB, though it "might" (uncertain, but probably) be a bit more expensive.

as far as i have heard, usb support still doesnt work well with linux... but on another note, all the printers we have are hp's, and they work great

I have some input referring to the HP Printers.
Having owned many, 695,697,712,722,882,PhotoSmart.
Plus IBM low end, now some Epsons.
The HP line is very rugged as I can tell, however saying a HP is fast is like saying a Ford or Chevy is FAST.. WHICH ONE ??
Some of my larger scanned images will take up to 20min to print ONE page, the 882 was rocket quick, the PS and the 712 are slow.
Beautiful, but Slow.
On Kodak Glossy paper, great prints result from medium to low settings on Quality.
On matte paper, HIGH quality is mandatory for great images.
I guess the Glossy paper don't take too much ink.
If you're gonna do both photos and lots of text, get a HP that you can fill the carts.
OR get Two printers, like the IBM C6 has real easy to fill cartridges.
Look for any HP printer with "Photo-Ret II or III"
This their "layering' process which works rather well.
The point of all the preceding drivel is to illustrate the need to check before you buy and make sure a set of ink cartridges aren't gonna set you back as much as a new printer.

I broke down and bought a HP T-45 all in one! Its big and a little costly but you can copy, fax, scan, prints really good color or B/W pictures with it too! great for homework and office work. HP 900 series is a GOOD choice.
