Has anyone been successful in making clear phone calls through the internet? If so what kind of modem is required? What other factors are important?

I always use yahoo voice chat to talk to my buddy who is in another country 12,000 miles away and we both use cable modems, there is a slight delay in the voice (depending on the cable traffic), but the quality is pretty good. Using a 56K modem will make the voice cut off, making it kinda annoying. That was my experience with 56k modem. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I got MediaRing Talk 2000 with my SB-Live card. I suggest you give that a try.

Dialpad works great for me also. I use a cable modem though.

Just got off the phone myself. Called up to Illinois and upstate Mississippi using MSN Messenger. Much better than Dial pad. Connects quickly and is very clear. Not as well as talking on the telephone. But I still have to invest in a good headphone set. Computer mike and speakers give an noticable echo. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
