Cannot access data on Direct CD discs

I back up my data to CD-R's with Direct CD and then close them to read in any CD player when they get 600-650 Mb on them. The problem is that now I can't access the data- I can see the files, but when I open a Word document, the text letters have been changed to square boxes, and trying to launch a program file gets me an error that says the program/file "is not a valid Win32 application."

The files are changed to read-only when the disc is closed, so I tried copying several to the hard drive and changing the attributes, with no success.

Any ideas? I'd hate to lose all my data... :(
