Guys,

I have, as the subject states, Presario 1800 laptop. I bought it a little over a year ago. ABout three or four months ago I had to send it to Compaq for warrnty work. The Video adapter was dying and causing weird errors. ANyway I got it fixed and they got it back to me quickly. However when I got it back, since it had been gone for a while, I had gotten something else to take its place. So now about one month after I got it back from support I am using it on a conastant basis. Now though there is another problem.

The system just shuts off at random times. No warning or anything just bam off. My gut reaction here is a heat problem. I can run AIM or Outlook no problem. But when I have those open and open Word and excel or something like than Bam it shuts off. No pattern .. just random. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Along those lines, I called Compaq support. The gentlemen told me the machine was out of warrnrty and I would have to pay 39.99 just to talk to him, let alon the cost of fixing it. I told him there was no way I was going to do that becuase this was not a warrnety issue, this was something there tech dept had done to my machine. The laptop never did anything like this before I sent it to them. Does anyone know of any options I have here I am not paying for this, this is there mistake and they need to fix it. Should I call back tech supoort and ask to speak to a supervisor? any ideas???

I don't know if you know this, but Compaq does not really care about its customers for its Prosignia/Prosario line of products. It is very unlikely that you will get any sincere attempts from them to help you with your problem.

As for the actual problem, have you tried just turning it on and leaving it without touching it? If it shuts off, then I would say it is unlikely you will find a way to diagnose/fix the problem. If it only shuts off when you are doing stuff, when perhaps you could trace down what exactly shuts it off.

Moto,

Thanks for the reply. No if I turn it on and it gets into windows its fine. I have not seen it turn itsself off for no reason. Its only when I start to run CPU intesnive programs that the machine turns off.

I have seen it shutdown loading Flash programs, loading Word. installing a program .. lots of different ways ...

So thats what makes me think it is a heat issue.
