I read somewhere that if you put your memory stick on your last DIMM you get better performance or something.Does anybody know something about this?Is this true or have I misunderstood something?

I would print it out for further reference. The online manual for mine was alot more comprehensive than the one that came with my computer. Also , updating the bios can add some features that were added to the revisions of that particular board. What type of Mbd. do you have?? Hope this is of smoe help http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Wilan Wong 09-15-2000, 05:40 AM If you place RAM on the module nearest to the processor it gives you more stability not performance. BC 09-15-2000, 06:47 AM The best RAM postion I have found is to get a firm grip on something. I mean after all if you are going to hit something that hard you might want to brace yourself http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif NDC 09-15-2000, 07:30 AM If you place RAM on the module nearest to the processor it gives you more stability not performance. And where did you come up this theory? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif [This message has been edited by NDC (edited 09-15-2000).] jad1097 09-15-2000, 07:52 AM My mobo manual says to put the first/largest stick in the slot furthest from the processor. So if I put it in the closest slot it will make it more stable? I guess the Soyo manual is wrong then. As pickel said go to the manufacturers site and download the manual because they may specify an order to put the ram in. Donkey 09-15-2000, 08:04 AM I was of the impression that it didn't make any difference which slot you were putting them in if it was only one stick. There may be a convention if you are wanting to fill all the slots with memory. djurom 09-15-2000, 04:39 PM That is the problem.I've looked for my manual and it's identical to my manual on CD. That was the reason I asked. And what is that with stability?Does anybody know how do you gain any stability with that positioning? I can't see any other reason except static interference. NDC 09-15-2000, 06:10 PM Really? I've used numerous different M/B and I've never seen that in the manual you should put the RAM module closest to the Processor for more stability. Has anyone heard of this before? If this is true, maybe I should change the positioning of all my RAM modules. Here is my ordering for the sticks: 256MB - 256MB - 128MB - 128MB = 768MB. djurom 09-16-2000, 05:08 PM First, I would like to thank Edward De Andrea for his e-mail. Well NDC, it looks like positioning is important because in Edwards e-mail were specs of his mobo and it specificaly says which combination of sticks should be used in each bank. BTW my mobo is DFI PA61 rev.D2 with latest BIOS. If anybody has better info for this topic I would appreciate it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif. pickel 09-16-2000, 06:22 PM djurom: I downloaded your manual to take a look and have come to the opinion that like my Mbd, it doesn't really make a difference in which slot you install the memory but not mixing the different kinds was the most important warning..."Using different types ( VCM(?), unbuffered or registered) of DIMM's may cause problems" I have 128 in one slot and 64 in the other and have swapped them and have seen no significant difference. Just gotta keep "messing " around til you find the right combo Good luck the pickel (Ed) NDC 09-16-2000, 06:45 PM where can I download this manual? I'm currently using Tyan, Soltek, and Abit M/B and I called thses guys and they told me it makes no differnce. djurom 09-16-2000, 06:53 PM I guess you're right pickel it doesn't make much difference with my mobo. NDC ->manual that Edward sendt me: http://www.biostar-usa.com/UserManual/Socket-7/ALI/M5ALA/Manual-M5ALA.htm NDC 09-16-2000, 07:46 PM Thanks Djurom. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif But they're only for BIOSTAR M/B. [This message has been edited by NDC (edited 09-16-2000).] djurom 09-17-2000, 06:09 AM Yeah, but what can you do? I don't know which type should I search for and this was just an example. Fingers 09-17-2000, 07:01 AM The confusion here might be the result of some manufacturers labeling the DIMMS slots from the processor outward and others label from the edge of the mobo inward. From pcmech.com's memory installation guide: The slots are numbered, such as DIMM 0, DIMM 1, and DIMM 2. Choose the lesser, unused number. If this is the only module in the system, use DIMM 0. From crucial.com: The memory should be organized from bank0 to whichever is your last bank, starting with the largest (in MB) and newest in descending order to the smallest (in MB) and oldest pickel 09-17-2000, 07:03 AM NDC>>> go to.. http://www.tyan.com/products/products.html http://www.motherboards.com/catalog/product_list.php?category_id=4&index_id=7&subcategory_id=7& Might find what you're looking for there http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif SysOpt.com
