I have a zip plus connected to my scsii card and a HP 5p scanner connected to my zip drive. The zip drive works properly and this configuration worked perfectly in 2 computers before. I have all the latest drivers for everything. This is my problem... My computer finds 6 scanners instead of just my one. All of them are HP 5P but none of them work. I was messing with everything for a while, removing all the drivers from safe mode and reinstalling them and I got the scanner to work properly once, then when I restarted my computer it did the same thing. It found 6 scanners and none of them worked. Since my scanner is at the end of the chain, it says that its self terminating and like I said it worked fine before, if there are anything pieces of information that I left out ask and I shall answer. I would really like to get this thing resolved as I have been without my scanner for about 2 months now. Thanks.
look in your bios and see if plug and play in turned on if it is turn it off then windows will not find it then do the install it sould work then
hope this helps

boot to safe mode and check out your device manager. remove all scsi devices and scanner dealies and other old shi* you might have in there. Then reboot and try the plug and play config and reload the drivers.

Try the above. Also;
How many SCSI channels (one?) and are they terminated properly?

Ok, Ihave fiddled with the ID setting and I get the same thing, I cannot plug the zip drive into the scanner as the zip is 25 pin and my scanner is 50 pin, also the scsii card is 25 pin, hence the cpu, then zip, then scanner. I have gone into safe mode and removed everything that goes to the scanner and it still finds 6 of them, Hmmmm, I think thats it.... No also as far as the plug and play, I have it off, its always been off, for the IRQ that the scsii card uses.

I have a couple of HP 5P's and a Photosmart Film scanner.
I disabled in device mgr mpu-401 midi so I freed up IRQ 11.
Try the scanner by its self. How do you connect a 25 pin device to a 50 pin ?
I use a Symbios Logic 20403 SCSI ISA card for mine and it's real quick.
Here's a cheap ISA card SCSI-2 50 Pin->>

Let us know,
BTW, if I win, donate mine to the SPCA.

Hmmm...I always had problems going from 25 pin controllers to 25pin devices then to 50 pin devices.
The fix is to get a better SCSI card with 50 pin ext connector, go to the scanner first, then use an adapter to go to the 25 pin zip.
That or add a second seperate scsi card for the scanner.

Ive had it this way befor, and it always worked. I also have a 50 pin scsii card put away, I just didnt want to have to install two scsii cards in the computer as I only have one slot left, but I guess I should give that a try. As how I connected them I have a cable with 50 pin one side and 25 pin on the other, man it was like 40 bucks when I bought it. If I connect this second card to the computer is it going to need another IRQ? I dont think I have any available. I have everything sharing everything here!

I had some good luck doing the WRONG way per HP.
I'd connect everything, reinstall windows ontop of the original, let the chips fall where they may.
You can at times temporary disable something in device mgr under and let them share.
Under "sound video and game controllers,
These have up to three base configurations to juggle i/o's/irq's.
BBA, Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you let most things share an IRQ as long as they don't run at the same time, or running as a TSR ?

Did you try fiddling with the SCSI ID setting, and try plugging ZIP into the scanner?

Speed, from reading your original post, I take it you changed computers and then the problem started. Try putting the SCSI card in a different slot as some of the new motherboards will share resources between slots. Good Luck!

I want your money!
Get into Safe Mode and Device Manager.
System Devices.
Blow away your PCI BUS and scanners.
Reboot.
You might have to manually load a few devices that Windoze fails to detect.
If this doesn't work then precede this stuff with a tweak to your PCI Steering Table. check out this page for the instructions:

Please send me an E-mail when you want my snail mail address to forward the cash. Thanks!
Cheers! (I wasn't to cocky was I?)

No dice party animals! I restarted in safe mode deleted all the scanner drivers then restarted. The computer rebooted and detected 6 scanners again. I went into the device manager and deleted the last 5 leaving the first one it found, then I restarted in safe mode, and looked into how many scanner driver it had and it only had one. So I restart the computer and it finds the 5 scanners I had deleted befor. None of the scanners work, When I push the button on the scanner my computer pinds like its going to start the scanner program but then just stops. It soesnt lock up but runs very slow from then on, not starting the scanner program. So what do you guys think?

Sorry about the double post I tried to delete the first one but it didnt let me. Anyways I did what you page said to beemer, after I restarted in safe mode erased all the scanners, then let the computer reboot aaaaannnnnndddd........... The same thing, it found six scanners again. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif WTF!?! Does anyone have any ideas??
Well Speed I also have a similar problem that I can not fix. So I will not be after your 20 bucks. I have an HP Scanjet 4C installed on my ABIT BE6 system. The difference is that mine installs 7 times in the device manager and it works fine. I read this post hoping to find a fix for my problem. I also have a 4C here at work, and a friend who has a 4C at home also. Three different PC's and all of them install the scanner 7 times in the device manager. I have had the Scanner for about two years and have reloaded my PC several times. It always installs the scanner the same way. Sorry I don't have any solutions for you. But you are not alone with this problem. By the way... all three of the systems I referred to have different SCSI cards and different configurations. I have even tried e-mailing HP for an answer. They never responded to my e-mails....big surprise. Good luck to you! I will continue to watch this thread for an answer, but I am not holding my breath.

Blow all Scanners away. Don't leave any.
Did you blow away the PCI BUS as well with the Scanners while you were in Safe Mode?
If that doesn't work then after you boot into Windows get into system Properties and device manager and system devices and double click on PCI BUS and on the IRQ Steering tab place a check into "Use IRQ Steering" use only the "Get IRQ Table Using MS Spefication Table".
Now go blow away all your Scanners again. Blow away your PCI BUS again.
Reboot into Windows.
Cheers!

In Device Manager and under one of your scanners, what files are in the File Details? This might give a clue.
I would like to see the panel if possible. Do a Alt + PrtScn and paste it into a program that will let you save the image in a .gif or .jpg format and post it here. If you don't have a web host, send it to me by E-mail. I want to see what is included in the brackets in the expanded file tree on that panel.
Have you tried typing hwinfo /ui into Run and see what it says about your scanner device?
Cheers!
