I'm trying to install drivers for my onboard lan, but everytime I get done with the manufactures cd for install I'm asked to put in my Win98se cd to finish. The problem is that I or the machine can't find the files (dll's, ect.) to complete the install. This is a brand new machine + I'm useing a o.e.m. version of Win98se. Since I couldn't get the M.B.'s lan working , I tried a Linksys pci ethernet card I had in my old machine + was able to get it work. I'd really like get the onboard lan to work so I can put the card back in my old machine. Anybody have any suggestions?

It might be worthwhile to check the BIOS and see if the on-board LAN is enabled. If not, it may cause driver install problems.
As for finding the files when asked for the Win 98SE CD, is it in fact looking in the right drive for the CD? When it says it can't find the files, you should get a window that allows you to specify the location of the files and direct it to the CD. Assuming this is a regular Win 98SE CD and not one that is used in a "quick restore" process as some manufacturers do. The files on those CDs are in big compressed files that the install utility won't be able to access and extract the necessary files.
You might do a file find on the hard drive, looking for *.cab, and see if the operating system install put the Windows cab files on the hard drive somewhere. If so, direct it to that location when it asks for the location of the files. Incidentally, they could be on a drive other than C:. Compaq, for example, partitions the hard drive into C: and D:, with D: containing the cab files on some models.
Hope this helps.

I have seen some machines with the CD reader as F why I have no clue! Seeing the only other drive would be the hard drive!

Thanks for the info guy's. I think the files are probably on a cab file on my hard drive. When I installed the driver for the linksys card it was looking for a cab file + I tried directing it to the C: drive (maybe \Windows to?) and it must have worked. This install appears to look for the individual files. I think I've got to find out what cab file it was and go directly there. Thanks again for the replies.
