I have just bought a HP Deskjet 970cxi and have the option of these two connections to my PC. Which is best in terms of speed and reliability? If I use the USB option what else can I use the parallel port at the back of the PC for?
I'm sure this is a small matter but I would like some opinion. Thanks.

USB might be a little faster, and you can hot plug with it.

I would go with USB, parallel ports are becomeing outdated.
Devices like printers and scanners may be able to run faster on USB than they can with a standard parallel connection, but only if the print head or scan engine can keep up with USB's higher data rate, which is not necessarily the case.
