and does it matter which player you use?

Obviously I phrased this question wrong and incomplete, or nobody knows what I'm talking about. I'm having problems with Realplayer8 with "audio player alerady in use" error as soon as you fire it up. No one. and I mean no one has a clue, including Realplay folks. I had no problems before I upgraded to this version, and now I can't go back and I cant' receive internet radio, etc. Gone thru all the setting, associations, etc. changes and nothing seems to free this thing up. Window media player works great. I've even un-installed it to no avail. I'll keep plugging and maybe Realplayer has a BUG.

First, that message is implying that something has already iniciated your sound card, I take it you havent got anything open like winamp, media player, sound recording software, games etc???? If not well have you tryed removing the sound card from your hardware profile, rebooting and re-installing that??? If your still having problems then try disabling all windows system sounds and see if that does anything?
After that I'll have to think about it more. Coudl you give me a list of any applications you have open at the same time, including all those in the system tray

I don't think anything else has it; I've even exited all in systray, un-installed media player, and ran just RP8. Also, the tech at my OEM last night suggested removing the hardware from device manager, and re-installing the drivers. I'll try that an see.
If I don't exit all programs before I initiate RP8, there is usually Virusscan, DirectCD, EZCD creator. But it seems, even after I exit these guys, that something is holding onto the audio, or making it look like it anyway.

Thanks.

also, since I'm running win95 machine, my thoughts are to back out to where I was, and re-install the previous version of Realplayer (6.x maybe) and the previous version of IE (4.X) since everything worked then and now they don't.

Is there anywhere in RP8 where you can select the output device, just that with winamp, you can select whether it is wave out or directsound, wondered if you could do that on RP8, and it may solve the problem. I'll have a think and see what else I can come up with.

Surely there must be a tool or way to tell what app might have the audio or other resources tied up?? There must be, and I'd sure like to know what that is.

Got it!! Had to backout IE 5.x and go to 4.x and ...PRESTO...everything works. So the moral is: don't load down IE 5.x with Win95. It will screw things up. Hope this helps someone else, 'cause it gave me fits!! Thanks to all who helped. Jim.
