I just got time warner road runner today. Am posting using it now, actually :)

Something strange though.......
The first time I turned the computer on, "found new hardware" did not come on. So I restarted, still nothing.

Then I tried using add new hardware in cont. panel, still no modem detected. I put the rr self install cd in and followed the wizard. Everything appears to be working fine, but I still have no modems listed when I click on modems in control panel, just a detection wizard, which detects nothing.

But as that I using it now, it clearly works. What is up with this?

So RoadRunner sent you a cable modem that connects via your PCI slot then? I'm used to seeing them have an external modem that connects to a network interface card that you put in your computer. How exactly is it connecting to your PC?

I have Road Runner and I have no new hardware listed either. I'm courious if when you ran that self install program if it gave you some kind of error like 90 something cause mine did that too but I called the tech and he said that that just means the modem is working. Bottom line is if your using it and it works fine then who cares right?

It is an external modem connected via rj45 - would it not be considered new hardware then?

Nope....your computer will not see it at all...except to pull an IP address from it because of it's DHCP server.

It is not part of you computer...it is a internet network gateway instead.

Wouldn't it detect a NIC though?

It must have, because he did mention he was using the cable connection to access Sysopt.

newbie~wan, the modem wouldn't be seen as new hardware, just as BBA had said. That would go for a lot of networking equipment, such as hubs, routers, print servers. I think the only cable modems that might get seen as new hardware are the ones that can connect directly to your USB port without a USB NIC. I believe 3COM has a model that does exactly that.

Mr. Goodbytes,

Ya, that sounds about right. My buddy has rr too, but w/ usb connection and his modem shows up in hardware. That's why I thought it should be in mine. You guys are clearly right, though.
Thanx for the info.
