Thanks. howste 09-12-2000, 11:49 AM Burp, (excuse me http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif) As for question 1, I don't know. I think there's a way to find out who owns the server though. Somebody more informed than I will have to answer. For question 2, see this thread: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/005290.html Sounds like Maximum PC is the magazine of choice for most here. Steve qball 09-13-2000, 12:04 AM howste, Finally a question unanswered..... MaxPC is my choice, regardless. One can kinda sorta determine the geographical location of an IP by running a tracert on a given IP address. I'm getting hosed on the firewall here, but the rouuter names and IP addresses can sometimes allude to the general geographical location. You should intuitively determine at least the country that hosts the server for the IP address. One may be able to determine even more, down to city perhaps. As the internet is a virtual network, this is probably the best one can hope for. thekingofpain 09-13-2000, 12:14 AM I posed the mag question awhile back, not sure if it'l help much but: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum17/HTML/000713.html howste 09-13-2000, 08:27 AM I did a little searching and found a site (with links to others) that allow you to enter an IP address and it returns the owner of that address. I tried it on some addresses that I already knew the owner of, and it did OK. I tried some IP addresses that I didn't know and it couldn't find some of them. Give it a try and see if it'll work: http://www.arin.net/whois/index.html I know that SysOpt records IP addresses of everyone who posts here. Maybe Scott, Mntsnow, or Socalgal know more about how to trace them... Steve Mntsnow 09-13-2000, 08:42 AM One of the quick and easy ways to find out who the "registered owner" is of an Ip addy is to use the tools avaliable from places such as www.samspade.org (http://www.samspade.org) or the link Steve listed above. If you need additional help just shout http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Fingers 09-13-2000, 08:43 AM Socalgal once suggested this one. http://www.samspade.org/t/ You'll get some ideas in these related threads also: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/004177.html http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/006559.html http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/007348.html http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/008076.html **edit** Arggg... remind me never to race with Mntsnow... He's just too fast. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif [This message has been edited by Fingers (edited 09-13-2000).] qball 09-13-2000, 09:30 AM The owner is one thing, but therein lies a problem. I can find the owner of any existing domain, but that may not even be helpful as owning a domain implies nothing. The domain may not even be hosted, in which case no IP even exists, thus no geographical location exists. My domain is a perfect example, you can get all of my owner info (mental not: it is out of date), but I don't even host the domain. If I did host the site, geaographical location of the server means little to me, so I could host the site in China for all I could care. Interesting type of problem. SysOpt.com
