Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Quantum Sold to Matrox NNNNoooooo!!!
My favorite drive manufacturer sold out their hard drive unit to Matrox - of all companies - I guess it could have been worse - they could have sold out to Western Digital.......
I've seen too many M's & WD's fail to have much trust there -
Anyone out there have any solid recommendations for a hard drive manufacturer?
And this on the heels of the 3DFX video card manu sell-off....
What is this? People making good products just aren't allowed to succeed - Beta V. VHS - Tucker V. Ford & GM -
   :(
Kinda old news ... and it's Maxtor, not Matrox, Matrox makes videocards, pretty far from making harddrives :)
Regarding reliable HD ... IBM for me, personally.
Some like others, you'll have to get more replies on this one :)
Best Regards ...

I mostly use Maxtor and IBM drives for IDE, Seagate for SCSI. Though, I would buy a Matrox drive if available. ;)

Beta V. VHS
You really thought Beta was better than VHS? Wow! I thought it was a joke!
Nevermind (we don't need a revival of a 70's war lol)
I'd buy Maxtor anyday! As for IBM, as much respect as I have for them, I'd stay away from their hard drives for a while (and that's based on personal experience -hold the rumors).

I purchased a CompUSA HD a couple of months ago. (Woke up early on a Sunday morning, found myself standing in a line with a bunch of geeks (!) waiting for advertised bargains, most of which were already gone.) Anyway, my cheapo "CompUSA HD by Maxtor" turned out to be a Quantum. No problem, except they had loaded a floppy of Maxtor's "MaxDrive" software in there which CANNOT be used with the Quantum!
The only HD I've had trouble with was a Fujitsu. It came in my first PC, crapped within 6 months. Replaced under warranty. Next one was bad out of the box. The third one is still workin' fine 3 years later.
I've got Maxtors and IBMs and Western Digitals and no complaints on any...including the CompUSA-Maxtor-Quantum.

NO single drive excells in all tests.
The 60GXP is no exception, however it does do everything well including staying coo under pressure.
I have several different 7200 rpm drives in service and all do very well, the only one I'm concerned about is a LM Series Quantum which runs almost too hot to touch.
I fabricated copper mounting brackets and placed a 80mm fan on it which works well to transfer the heat away from the drive.

IBM Deskstar 60GXP
"a measured seek time of just 8.1 milliseconds, beating the specs by a comfortable margin… something that's too rare these days. "
"60GXP's Workstation Index score of 166.59 soundly defeats second-place Western Digital's Caviar WD400BB by a margin of 11%. "
"IBM's Deskstar 60GXP delivers eerily similar performance to that of its predecessor. This may to many be a disappointment. In this day and age, however, simple maintenance of performance is welcomed. The 75GXP, after all, managed to fend off all comers and retain its long-standing StorageReview.com leaderboard slot. The 60GXP stands poised to take its place. "

No kidding Rob; If Matrox is building HDD's, I'll take two!
But seriously, I buy nothing but WD for myself, and anyone else if I have any say. Just my preference, all major brands are good.
