Hi all
I just bought the book A+ All In One by Michael Meyers and the CD that came with the book has a "Learnkey" video clip which shows Mr Meyers talking. I cannot get the sound to work.
I read thier FAQ and it was no help. I e-mailed them and they sent me a couple of things to check in control panel but I still cannot get the sound to work. All other CD's play in the CD player and I have a Plextor 12/10/32A which also has no sound. Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on. I'm running W98 350 MHz 10G 160MB ram DSL service. sound card is a ENSONIQ.
I am leaving now to go to night school so I won't be back here until tomorrow. Thanks for any help.

Hmmm....Do you have the CD audio cable that goes from the CD drive to the sound card connected? :D

I don't know how many times I have done this myself.
Do you have more than one CD player in your machine?

Are both of these "CD's" in your computer? What exactly do you have and what are you trying to use?
there are several possibilities -
did you ever listen to any other CD's off this drive & sound card?
bad cable out to the speakers -
interior speaker is still connected?
Does the computer have on-board audio and you added the sound card on top? did you remember to disable the on-board audio hardware and unload the on-board audio drivers?
might be that the sound card is fighting another component for an IRQ interrupt - select another one in the sound card set-up -
could be a bad cable between the cd and the card -
have you tried headphones right off the CD - does that work - might be a bad CD audio channel
have you removed the audio card from within the device manager - rebooted - and allowed the system to auto-detect the card - then give it the card's driver CD? - sometimes that's what's needed to fix it -
the device manager is also the place where you can disable any on-board audio components in the system's device profile.
Another thing you might try is to explore the CD - find the audio file on it - copy it to your hard drive and try to play it from there -
That's all that comes to mind without knowing more

If all other CDs play sound in the drive, the drive's audio channels must be OK and the drive sound cable must be connected to the sound card. Otherwise, no CDs would play sound.
The Plextor doesn't play sound as it almost certainly does not have it's audio cable plugged into the sound card. Most sound cards only have 1 CD-Audio input connector.
As a test, I would unplug the sound cable from the CD-ROM drive at the sound card and plug in the sound cable from the Plextor to the sound card. I'd bet the Plextor won't play sound from that CD either.
I suspect the software on the CD uses it's own proprietary player that is part of the program. There must be a problem with it's programming, or installation.

open your volume control, click "options" then "properties". put a check next to everything in the list. Click "OK". make sure nothing is muted but the mic and try again :)

If he is playing a video clip with audio then the cables are irrelevant. I highly doubt his cd drive is stripping out the audio data from a video stream just to play it out the cda cable.
Have any wav files (Window's sound effects) ever played correctly?
Which player are you using? Does it supply codec info?
When playing the clip do you have a audio bar at the bottom? Volume control... or is it greyed out?

I have one CD-ROM which is a LG CDR8322B and the Plextor 12/10/32A the Plextor does not have a audio cable going to the sound card. Only the CD-ROM has that. Audio CD's Play fine in the CD-Rom. BTW Thanks for all the reply's. I have Winamp installed as a player and I also have the Microsoft player but I have the feeling that this CD wants Real Jukebox in order to play the sound and I hate Real Jukebox.

I do not know how to do this. I am going to try shifting the audio cable from the CD-ROM to the Plextor and see if that will work.
Thanks again.......Gary

Well I switched the audio cable from the CD-ROM to the Plextor and the Plextor can now play audio CD's but still no sound from the video clip.

I did what you said but no luck.

Yes I can play other windows wav files. There is no audio bar at the bottom.
I am going to download Real player and see if that will make it work.

I installed the basic Real player. I told them I did not want an icon in my system tray and what do I get? Two icons in my system tray. The CD still has no sound. I call McGraw Hill and they are sending me a new CD. Hope that does it. Thanks to all.

I haven't tried it. I took it to my computer school last night at Brandon High School but I forgot the computers there do not have any speakers. I will try it at my son's house but he works all the time.
