Right now - i am enjoying a danish thunderstorms (i luuuurveee thunder and lightning)... but it got my thinking...

I have always been told not to use the phone whenever there is a thunderstorm - discharge in my ear, no thanks!

But what about mu adsl modem - it is hooked into my phoneline.. and into my computer - bad thing right?

i just unplugged it - just in case... (i'll plug it in when i need to post this, though...)

If it happens (lightning strike) - i hope that it in some way will mutate my K6-III into something awesome - 2500 GHz or something...

Wiruz land! - the land of impossebilities!

Am i paraniod (the central having hardware to cope with this) - or will it fry my 'puter?

Yup, modems get fried by surges in the phone lines. I got the carcass of a 56K one here...

Now you made me hungry, Wiruz. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Get a surge protector that also serves the phone line. Mine is a surgemaster II about $30.00 us. I live in the lightning capital of the us. Tv weatherman reported over 9'000 lightning strikes in just one storm last Sat. or Sun. don't remember which now as it stormed both days. barry

Definately get some kind of surge protection on the phone line...also on the power line http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
The best solution would be to get a UPS (battery backup) that will also offer surge protection for the phone line. That way you won't have to worry about power outages, brownouts (which can burn up power supplies) and surges. In case of an outage you will have time to shut down your system gracefully.
