I've been following the thread about Diablo II hoping it might be related to my problem:

Diablo II- I've had it up to ~ (here) (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66420)

I went to the links and read the entire thread and it doesn't look like I found any suggestions to fix it.

Here's the problem. I had done a clean install of Win98SE and reinstalled Diablo II. Everything worked fine. I went to go to play online using Blizzard.net and it downloaded the patch just fine. The Blizzard updater ran and it asked if I wanted to place an Icon on my desktop. After I answered "No" it went back to the desktop and nothing happened. I let it sit there for a few minutes and it did nothing. I hit CTL-ALT-DLT and the task manager came up and showed the following:

Explorer
Systray
Game
diablo ii

I hit cancel and let it sit for a few minutes and nothing happened. I killed the Game process and it froze. I rebooted and tried to start the game and the screen went black and nothing happened. The only way to get out of this was the reset button. CTL-ALT-DLT wouldn't work.

My specs:
Win98SE
Athlon 1.2Ghz
Radeon 32MB DDR
Abit KT7-RAID
384MB CAS2 Crucial RAM
Monster MX300 Sound
Linksys NIC

Any ideas? Or anyone know of a good Diablo II website with this type of technical help?

Just so you know I did send an email to Blizzard and they responded for me to run scan disk and defrag my hard drive. I did and still no go.

Funny that, I have DiabloII on my system, with desktop icon.
I just tried to re-install without the icon and low and behold it shat itself!!

The only common denomonators being the Athlon1.2 and Blizzards incompetant programmers, I bet you anything the forgot to end a repetion statment!!

Oh well good luck, and what the hell can SD and DF do? The Blizzard programmer must get advice of the Blizzard Tech Support guys!!! HEHE

I've read out on the Google Groups (alt.games.diablo2) that it will fix my problem if I change my CD Rom from Master to Slave. The whole issue seems to have come up because the Diablo2 game doesn't like RAID controllers and because they are trying to stop the no-CD cracks I guess.

Anyway, my question: what impact will this have on my performance?

I am using the Abit KT7-RAID

Highpoint IDE3 - IBM 30GB HD
Highpoint IDE4 - nothing

IDE1 - Pioneer 16x DVD
IDE2 - Sony 8x CDRW

What kind of havoc will it cause by changing my Pioneer from master to slave? Any at all?

Changing my CDROM to slaved did work for me.

Here's (http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=25818#post25818) where I found this solution.

I only tried to run D2 on a RAID system once (ie--using the RAID ports on my KT7-RAID.

The game ran so slowly / poorly that I simply reconfigured to use primary / secondary IDE. Fixed it.

Yeah, I've always run my CD/DVD/CDRW on my RAID board from the non-RAID IDE ports as suggested by ABit.

This problem has to do with the VIA chipset and something Blizzard has done in a fight against piracy. By setting the CD-ROM drive that you running the game from to SLAVE it works. Otherwise it locks up your PC.

Blizzard is aware of the problem, according to the emails that I've received from them. They just haven't publicly done anything about it on their website.
