Couple of suggestions.
Buffer overruns occur when your computer can not get the data to the burner fast enough. The burners laser is still on and no data..'error' and a coaster.
Make sure all other processes are stopped. Do a ctrl-alt-del and check the task master. Shut down any non-essential programs. Make sure you turn off the screen save. While it's burning, don't try to do any other work with the computer. Don't move the mouse, don't touch the keyboard.
I have found that doing these things will minimize your chance of buffer over runs.
hope this helps

If you are getting buffer underruns at 1X which is minimum speed (150kb per second), I doubt that you'd do any better at 4X. As Anwall has replied above, you get buffer underrruns when the CDROM is not getting the data in time and the buffer memory gets empty. Try not to utilize CPU for other programs other than the CD burning program, Multi-tasking while burning CD's can also cause buffer underruns.
You may also want to try using another brand of CDR media. Some CDRW or CDR drives have compatibility issues with certain brands of medias. In my case I was getting bad burns with Memorex CDRW's , but solved the problem by trying a different brand. Look for the brand of media that works for you, and stick with it.
If it comes to the worst, you might want to try copying to disk first before you copy to CD. And if you still get buffer underruns, it may be possible that your CDRW or CDR drive is defective or your OS, CD burning software may be causing the error.

Hmmmm, I doubt that running the Norton Anti-Virus program running in the background could cause buffer underruns, I have NAV running in the background on all the systems that I use at home and work and non of them get buffer underruns due to that program running in the background. Have you tried a different brand of media yet?

Check you havent got powersaving mode enabled on, so it shutdown your hard drvie and puts it into standby mode, did this on mine, gave me 3 coasters before I realised. I noticed when it was burning and I heard my HDD power up whistle followed by *ding*. Then me going DOH followed by sharp crashing sound as foot has high velocity impact with computer. Then I reboot, find power management in Bios, problem solved!

I know some og the old ide burners did that... if it was a slow computer - just getting the data to the recorder took to much prcessing power http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif - never had one of those.
The info is probably obsolete now - but my advise is to stay away from IDE - though the new CDR drives should be more that ok.
Never had that problem before... SCSI & Plextor!

BTW - funny story:
A friend of mine - who's computer is really WIERD! - had to run winamp while he burned - if he didn't, he would get a buffer underrun... explain that!

Would it be better to copy the files onto my hard drive then on to the cd??
