I am putting one in right now as a mater of fact. What I did was set my bios that my system boots to the scsi (assuming thats the drive that has your operating system on it). My boot order says somthing like boot a/scsi/c. Next I installed an ide harddriive as a secondary master via my ide controler on my motherboard. Rebooted, my bios found the new HD then windows found it now all I have to do it format it.

Now, depending on your configuration you might have to install a controller card. My setup is ide on the motherboard and a scsi controller card in pci slot 2. If you have scsi controler on your motherboard then you will need to install a Ide controler card to install your Ide harddrive. If your setup is like mine then your good to go.

Hope this helps

This would depend on how you're going to set up the two hard disks.

a) Are you going to have an OS on each hard disk so that you and your son will ecah have your own Windows?

b) Will Windows be installed on just one hard disk and the primary reason for you and your son having your own hard disk is for saving data?

If your choice is "a", you would need a boot manager such as System Commander so you will be prompted at systop boot up on which OS you want to boot to. If you don't want to spend the extra cash for a boot manager utility, you can also control the bootup disk selection by setting "Boot Sequence" in the BIOS...

If your choice is "b", all you would have to do is add the second hard disk and set the Master/Slave mode and also make sure to label one of the disks "DAD" and the other hard disk "SON" . ;)

i'd like to set the scsi up with XP and the ide with ME because my video cam is not supported with XP and we need that for now ! but he wants his own drive !!!!! another question can this be done, when windows opens can you switch between OS without rebooting up ???

my motherboard is ide also

No, you cannot toggle between OS's without rebooting since system files and hardware detection needs to be loaded at start...

Another thing is that you will need to purchase a SCSI controller card to utilize a SCSI device...Before you jump into the SCSI wagon, I think you need to really decide if it's going to be worth it. In my case, I use a Ultra-160 10,000rpm SCSI drive since I use many applications that perform heavy I/O and I do a lot of multi-tasking. However, if you plan on running everday applications such as MS Office, few games, Internet browsing, etc, I would say just go with EIDE interface drives...

so the best way to go is to setup like socio said and get a new cam and use one OS would that be right!!! right !! the other question is i want to fdisk my ide drive and start from fresh and with my new scsi ,so how do i do the OS on these drives ??? do i have to do it twice !!!

If you're going to loading an OS on each drive, yes, it will be twice the work... In order to FDISK the SCSI drive, you will need to boot the system using a Windows boot diskette so it'll load the generic SCSI drivers. Simply booting the system will not enable FDISK to recongnize the SCSI drive...

Just connect the hard disk to the IDE-0 channel and set it up as Master. You can set the drive mode by setting the jumper located next to the IDE cable connector on the hard disk. As for jumper settings, just look on the hard drive itself and there should be a diagram. If there is not diagram for the jumper settings, go to the manufacturer site to find out.

Before you start the next step, make sure you have a Windows boot diskette. You will need the Windows Boot diskette to load generic driver to have access to the CDROM when the time comes to install Windows98. As for Window 2000, you can simply boot from the CDROM since Windows 2000 CDROM's are bootable CD's.

After the hard disk has been installed as described above, boot the system using a Windows boot diskette. Just format the hard disk by typing format c: at the DOS prompt. If you need to repartition the drive, go to the link below and it will give you a step by step instruction on how to use FDISK...

Now - I would not be caught dead in this situation - if you have the means to buy SCSI equipment anyway - I would have advised you from the start to build or buy your son his own computer -

you will end up fighting system conflict issues and each other as you both want to use it - BAD idea -

I've built my wife her own machine and will soon be doing so for my 4yr old daughter -

I don't want them messing up my system - if they download and install junk on their stuff - fine, but it's not going to stop me from getting on my system -

I didn't see this mentioned in the thread - but typically, getting a system to boot from a SCSI drive when you have an IDE drive connected to the system is going to take a BIOS change in the boot sequence - at least it has on several of the machines I've worked with doing what you are doing -

I see you have the same SCSI Adapter as I do, 29160N. I'm using a Seagate Cheetah Ultra-160 10k drive with mine. Unlike EIDE drives, you won't have to set the jumpers for Master or Slave mode, you have to set the ID#. You can connect up to 15 devices on the single channel on Adaptec 29160N's...

All you have to do is boot the system using a Win98 boot disk and it will load the generic drivers for the SCSI drive so it'll be accessible for the Windows installation. If you're planning on installing Win2k, this will not be necessary since it will automatically load the default drivers for the installation. As for Windows Me, I'm not sure about installing Win ME because I haven't installed it on a SCSI based system.
