What is the difference between CDR and CDR for audio discs?

CDR for audio disks say the can only be used for audio. Why is that? If I can use regular cdr discs for audio why can't I use cdr for audio discs for data?

Don't ask me how, but you can use audio CDR's for data. I used one when I ran out of regular CDR's. I belive audio CDR's are manufactured with a different colored layer to be compatible with audio CD players. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. :)

"Audio" CD-R's are intended for use on stand alone audio CD recorders (the ones that would be part of your hi-fi system). These cost more because there is a royalty tax added to them. They also are digitally flagged so the recorder will recognize them as being the proper type and thus allow recrding. Other CD-R's are meant for computer use (duh) and can be used for audio, among other things, when used in a computer burner.
