I have two machines networked together with a hub. The first is a Win98 se machine. The other machine is a win2k machine. I have ICS running on the 98 se machine to share the 56k modem, and it works fine. I have no trouble accessing shared files on the 98 machine from the win2k machine.
I can see the win2k machine in network neighborhood from the 98 machine but I cannot see the shared folder on the win2k machine.
I have created a user on the win2k machine that matches the login and password on the 98 machine. I have even logged on to the 98 machine as a user with admin rights to the win2k box, but I still can't see the shared folder.
The machines are a workgroup, not a domain. TCP/IP is running as well Microsoft file and print sharing
Can someone tell me what I am missing?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

I had something similar happen..it was related to the password settings and on an account I just created to allow the client computer to access a share on the W2K computer. I don't remember what it was exactly but I think I had the account checked to "change password at next logon" so I couldn't connect to the share with that account until it was changed. May also relate to a mininum password length requirement when a password has not been entered that conforms to the policy.
So actually logon to the W2K computer with the same account you want to use from the W98 computer and log back out. Then try it again from the Win98 PC.

Thanks for the response,
It turned out that if I shared the C drive with a new share name (instead of C$) that it will let me see it.
I think sometimes just writing down your difficulties helps to solve them.:)
thanks,
mike

Glad you got it... the $ denotes a hidden share. I believe it's originally put there as one Administrative access point.

I have a similar problem in that I can see the Win2k machine but when I try to access it, it asks for a password that I never, ever set. Even so, I've tried all my "standard" passwords but no luck. What's with that?

Toad,
Did you have a local user account setup on machine (win2k) you are trying access, that matches the user and password you logged into the accessing machine(win98) with?

Triengle,
Thanks for the reply. I do not use logins for any of my computers. That's why I was surprised when it asked me for a password because I didn't have any setup.
I'm obviously Win2k illiterate so how do I setup a local user account? If you don't mind send me a PM so we can get out of this fellows thread.
