First Question, Yes
Second Question, Yes, AthlonXP
But, even if you wait for it there wiil be another one just around the corner. That is just the way it is. Yuo won't go wrong getting the 1.4/266 it will run anything for quite some time to come. XP should be out in mid to late October.

I think you might also want to focus your attention more on what platforms will best utilize the capabilities of the Athlon. SIS already has a new chipset for AMD on the market, and nVidia and VIA will have their latest and greatest (in nVidia's case, their first) platforms hitting the streets in the upcoming month. There are many different ways to get better performance out of a system than just the processor. Keep that in mind when shopping.

Is XP the 1.5 I heard they were coming out with? Or is that something different?

Actually, you could get a couple of 1.4MPs, and have a multi-processor computer;) But, personally, I think its overkill.

With Athlons i'd look for the stepping rather then the CPU speed.
The 1.4Ghz Athlon-C with stepping AYHJA is probably the best now (that's what i'm running) and the price is right for it.
I'm sure the AthlonXP will be faster and will probably overclock much higher but will be pricier.

It's the usual price v's performance arguement.

The Athlon-C means the cpu runs at 133mhz FSB(266mhz DDR).

AYHJA basically is the code for the week of manufacter, some weeks are better and that's one week where a lot of chips o/ced very well
