Can 'only' Adobe Acrobat convert a document from it's current format (i.e. doc, pub, xls, etc.) to Adobe Acrobat's PDF format? Or, are there utilities or 3rd party applications that can also perform this job?
A full version of Acrobat is $210. That is quite a bit to do 'nothing' but convert existing documents to .pdf.
Thanks,
Brian

Nothing else will not it that I know of.
Have you tried Ebay? Older versions of Acrobat writer can be gotten fairly reasonable...
check this for example

Corel 9 works i just tried it. Corel is an awesome program, I got it a couple weeks ago and totally love it. I have no artistic skills but with this program i can actually draw. Here at work i have been sharing and editting graphics to and from Adobe Illistrator and Photo shop, they all work flawlessly. it really peeves the Mac graphics guys when they see a PC opening and editing their files. Anyway do a search on Pricewatch for Corel, I got this for $65.00, complete 3 CD's (Draw9, Photo/Paint, and a million cliparts, templates, and textures) and 3 big full color manuals.
see ya

First, how easy do you think:
That is quite a bit to do 'nothing' but convert existing documents to .pdf.
Converting ONE document format is a non-trivial thing, converting "doc, pub, xls, etc." is non-trivial squared. Sure open *.doc, File, Save as HTML, makes it seem easy, but it t'aint.
Anyway, I've used freeware "Distiller"s before. They create PDFs, but their functionality is somewhat limited. For example, I used one that would create PDF from HTML, but that's it. Another converted word docs...

Look in the current Computer Shopper. Acrobat is listed in there for $87.50
And go to http://www.pricewatch.com
Academic version is available for ~$60, upgrade for $90, full retail ~$150

for that much money I would get the cheaper Corel WordPerfect Suite 10 - it can publish to Adobe version 3 or 4 PDF files that can remain editable in WordPerfect. Adobe 5 will open them as well. That way you can also take your evil empire's current format (i.e. doc, pub, xls, etc.); open them in WordPerfect or the analogous Presentation Quatro Pro and publish away in pdf format. Or just work natively in the competing suites programs

You must use Acrobat to author PDF files.

print to a file as a postscript.
find a linux or unix user. ask them to convert it to pdf. ps2pdf is the application and the PDFs look very clean.

I didn't look for the link but I think Adobe.com has (at least had) a free email or upload utility that would convert to/from PDFs...its biggest downfall was the 2~3 day delay in processing. It was compatible with HTML, TXT, and ?

I use the full acrobat 4.0 - but you might check out http://www.pdfzone.com/products/software/index.html - sometimes you can find a trial product that might work for you.

I searched on CNETs download.com and found the following to work great for creating PDF documents from ANY file format: pdf-Xchange
I downloaded the demo and it worked great -- however it includes a header and watermark which won't work for business purposes. Thus, I paid only $44.50 and have the full version. It works without a hitch.
Thanks
