I have a K7T Turbo Limited Edition Mobo with a 1.2 - 200 fsb Thunderbird, will be worth to change cpu to a 266 fsb?

Yes, why? No, why?

Please be patient I'm new here.

TIA

Gilberto

Have you checked your cpu to see if it is factory un-locked?
You might not need to change the cpu...just change the FSB.
try setting your motherboard to 10.5 x 133 (266) this would give you a 1.4 ghz...I think most 1.2 t-birds will go to 1.4 w/o much problems. This assumes you have the 133/266 setting on your motherboard and some good cooling. Good luck.

Thanks MrLuigi but...

Mobo is capable to 266 fsb with jumper, but cpu is only 200 fsb, my question is about if is worth upgrade to a Tbird 266 fsb capable.

Actually I'm running 13 X 116 = 1508 Mhz.

If I get a 266 fsb cpu will improve performance ?

A couple of things. For one, I think all 1.2Ghz or higher Athlons are factory unlocked. Second, I don't think you need to buy a new 266Mhz CPU. I think you can just change the jumper and your 200Mhz (100Mhz FSB), 1.2Ghz CPU will run at 266 (133Mhz FSB). Just remember to set that multiplier low before you change the jumper.

Underclock the CPU to 6x then change the jumper. Next time you boot it will run at 800Mhz (6x133). Then change the multiplier to 9x so it will run at 1.2Ghz.

Cpu has L1 bridges connected, no pencil job needed.

I tried changing jumper to enable 266 fsb, system no post at all,
D-led all four leds are red.

Then I change jumper to 200 fsb and everythings works fine.

Later I will try your suggestion and see what happens.

So don't need upgrade a 266 fsb cpu?

I'd leave the FSB jumper where you have it. Try adjusting the multiplier (or ratio) settings in your BIOS software. You may also be able to adjust your FSB settings from BIOS as well.

As you increase the frequency (MHz), keep an eye on your temperatures with a program like Motherboard Monitor. You can download a copy here: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

"Finally, welcome to SysOpt!"

Good luck.

PS: In all likelihood, a 200 FSB CPU is all you need and many claim is a better overclocking CPU than the higher FSB CPU.

I believe you need to set the multiplier down to a lower level before you set the jumper. If you do not and change the jumper to 266Mhz operation then it will try to boot at the old multiplier (12x if it is a 1200Mhz Athlon) with the new FSB of 133Mhz.

That would give you an operating speed of 12x 133 = 1596Mhz which it probably won't do.

I'll take a look on the web for some evidence that this has been done before. I believe I remember reading about it. Especially when the KT133A motherboards first came out and there was a scarcity of AthlonC's on the market.

If I have understood what is going on, you are changing the fsb to 133 without changing the mulitpliers first. If the bios is set to 13 times 116 to get 1508 giz. When you change to 133 mhz fsb, and do not change the multipliers, you are trying to do 13 times 133 = 1729. It ain't gonna do that.

It is necessary to change the mulitipliers when changing the fsb. Try changing the multipliers to 10 times, and save that (if your multipliers are in bios) shut down, and set the board for 133 mhz fsb. This should give you 1.33 ghz...you can up the multipliers a little at a time to get the max it will run at...you will also have to up the Vcore some as well.

Thanks to everobody

Last night I bring back multiplier to 8 (in bios), then change jumper to 133 reboot and nothing works, only 4 leds in red.

Reverse and boots fine to 1508, I think my Mobo doesn't like
133 fsb with my tbird being only 100 fsb.

By the way is an AHYJA. Running at 47 C, at both settings 1200 and 1508, no difference at all. Will try better cooling. Ans CPUKool
it helps with my tbird 1000@1358.

Is good to be here.

Gilberto.
