I've been overclocking my computer with relatively good success. I have my Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz running at 1373 MHz. The motherboard it sits on is the A7A266. Temperatures are good, a steady 50°C under 100% load for 2 solid days. So I was going to try to get it to 1.4GHz but when I tried to but it gives me the "Invalid System Disk" error, no disk was in, it isn't even supposed to look at disk drive during boot up according to the bios. The A7A266 says that it supports AMD chips from 550 Mhz to 1.2GHz. Is this system disk error from the motherboard not being able to keep up with the processor or is it something else that I've forgotten? I'd really like to know what's going on. This processor seems to be able to handle just a little bit more but it looks like that won't happen yet.
It sounds like the overclocking may have raised the bus too high... What is your current FSB?

I've tried the FSB at 140 with the mulitplier at 10x, and FSB at 133 with multiplier at 10.5x. With both I receive the same results. In earlier attempts at overclocking I've had the FSB running at 142 at a lower multiplier setting and that worked. I can get it to boot with the FSB at 137 and multiplier of 10 and at 131 with the multiplier at 10.5, but with the FSB even one step up at either multiplier setting, I get the same error. So really it won't load windows at anything above 1380MHz.

You might want to CAREFULLY adjust the core voltage up just a touch.. This could make all the difference. Just remember a 10% increase in core voltage is as far as you want to go.. Also remember that with the increased voltage you will of course get an increase in processor temps. Make sure your HS and fan are up to the job.
I would like to say one more time be real careful with the core voltage. 10% is not a very big change in numbers but IS a very big change in possibly frying your CPU.

The processor runs now at 1.75 volts, what would be too much? I really don't want to push it beyond 1.85 but 10% is a little over 1.9V. I have tried it at 1386MHz with 1.8 volts and got the Windows splash screen (an improvement) but it failed to load after 5 minutes (normal booting time is under 30 seconds). The fan and heat sink should be more than comfortable in dealing with a little more heat but I don't want to push the voltage too far.
The problem seems to be with your HD, less possible with RAM. 140MHz FSB means almost 46MHz PCI, so your HD may fail. My IBM 75GXP can't run above 43MHz PCI, same errors like yours.
Best Regards ...

Just got it to boot up at 1.4GHz!! I've got the voltage set to 1.85 volts, with the FSB at 140MHz and the multiplier at 10x. Temperatures are running right at 58°C to 59°C under full load for the past hour. I'll jump on Quake in a minute and see if it will push it just a little more. I'm not real thrilled with the temperatures this high so I don't think it will stay at 1.4 but I'm pretty happy with my first overclocking experience. :) :)
