I have a Pentium II that I have recently added a burner to. To do that I had to move by CD-R from the primary device on the secondary IDE to the slave on the primary IDE and make the new burner the primary on teh secondary IDE. The burner came with Nero software and appears to be working OK but my old CD-R won't read much of anything, when you put a CD in it it just spins and never gets to the ready point so I have to use my burner for both reading and writing. Since there are a lot of brighter people in the world than me I am sure someone will have an idea or two I can try.
My machine has an AOpen motherboard with Award BIOS (not current and not worth updating)

Thanks.

When you say "CD-R", I think you are referring to CDROM Drive, right? CD-R drives are similar to CDRW drives, the difference is that CD-R drives are compatible to "Write-Once". not "Re-Write" like CDRW drives can...

I would check the following:

1. Is the CDROM mode set to "Slave" since the the new CDRW drive you installed is "Master"

2. Is the IDE cable connected to the CDROM drive seated correctly?

3. If there is a mode setting for the secondary IDE channel, have you tried lowering the mode?

Yes I meant the CDROM and I did switch the jumper to slave and during bootup it says thats where it is and when I go to the control panel and check the CDROM it says the device is working properly but it really is not.
As far as the mode setting for the IDE channel, where would I look for/check that? In the BIOS?

Thanks:

Yes, if the feature exists, it would be in the BIOS setup...

i just added a burner also,a few days ago. i,too, have a p2 processer. i also had the same problem you have. the rw worked fine, but the rom wouldnt read anything. also have nero software. luckily for me,the problem magically disappeared. but i did notice one thing just before it corrected itself: when i put a cd in the rom drive,(cd t i used before,so i knew the rom would read it) i would go to my computer and click on the burner icon and the rom drive would work. also, did you disconnect the autoinsert notific ation for all cd drives. (device manager/cd rom and cdrw/properties/settings/ unselect auto notification)check out thread called minor burner woes by draboo. explorer has some good ideas. hope this helps and good luck.
