I have Worldshare and really don't like the Sharebar.

Hate to pay for an ISP, but it looks like it has to be done.

Can anyone suggest some good ones?

Hey Chuck
I've tried a lot of the free ISPs but my favorites were taken over by JUNO (which suck). Currently I'm using WebFlyer......so far it's been great: FREE, very small banner and, great connect speeds.

If ping is important to ya (for online gaming & such) then the best ISP is probably going to be a very small and very local ISP.

Try: www.netzero.net (http://www.netzero.net) www.freedsl.net (http://www.freedsl.net) (small banner) www.bluelight.com (http://www.bluelight.com) (best experience so far) www.altavista.net (http://www.altavista.net)

or:

you ought to be able to find a local isp for approx. $10/mo.

Yeah, I'd rather stick with the worst ISP, whether its Juno or NetZero (because of their floating banners that get in the way), than have to pay $20 a month for an ISP. That's a full tank of gas, and its money you throw away.

The best ISP right now IMHO is Address.com
Try it and see!

Well, here where I live, I pay $20 (AUS) a month, and I get unlimited download, unlimited access, and there is no killer daemon. Now I think that pretty sweet http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Plus, the ISP is bloody fast as well http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
It's called Dingo Blue!

to each their own, there's no right or wrong here (right is what makes you happy), but IMO you've got to be a real cheap @$$ not to be willing to pay a meager $20 a month for an ISP. it's worth the $20 not to see banner ads (i don't care how small), in addition to having them take up bandwidth. but then again, my family uses the internet extensively. if i just logged on for email and to take a peek at the news once in a while i'd go with a free ISP too. and BTW - i WISH $20 would pay for a tank of gas.

to answer the question, you'll never know unless you try. someone can have sucky service in one state but the same ISP doesn't market heavily in another and therefore has little traffic on their servers. furthermore your friend across town might have a crappy experience with one ISP, but when you try it out it works great. the difference? you're hitting totally different switches within the local telco, some digital and some analog. your friend across town may decide to cancel service and go with another ISP, only to find out the he's dialing the same number because the access numbers are leased by both ISPs from the same (3rd party) company. then again, someone you might know complains they always get busy signals when calling their ISP and either A) they never called tech support/cust service to find out there are 5 other access numbers in the area (which aren't busy) or B) after several months of busy signals the ISP overhauls the whole setup making them faster than ever.

in other words, no one can give you the definative answer you're looking for. you can get a general idea, but not a very good idea at that. the best information you'll get is the level of customer service provided. sorry!

good luck.

Outpatient has it right.

I'd go with a local ISP.

not always. i've heard horror stories of local ISPs that didn't have the capacity to handle all the city-loyal customers. definately worth checking out though. see my post above.
