Robin,
I have done what your are wanting to do. I found Music Match to be a very easy to use program and its free. You can get it from www.musicmatch.com.. They have a free version.
All you need is some sort of tapeplayer or record player with a line out. Get you a cable and go from cassette deck out into line in of your audio card.
Get music match and scroll to options and under record select line in. Hit play on the tape and the record button on music match and "go to town". You can title your recordings as you please.
As far as getting rid of the hiss, or cracking from the records I dont know about that. I'm sure you could make it better but not much better.
Once they are copied over to your hard disk you can put em cd with ease.
Hope this helps, Jody

I've use Easy CD Creator 4 and 5 Sound Stream to transfer my records and tapes to CD works quite well, very easy to use.
DART :
Digital Audio Reconstruction Technology
=======================================
The first professional audio restoration system for damaged
audio files.It capable of removing both impulsive disturbances
(clicks,pops and record scratches) and wideband noise(tape hiss,surface noise)
and does it in a fast and efficient way.
I have it right here, about 900kb, pretty old stuff, but does it's job quite well.
Mail me if you want it, unless you found a better solution :)
Best Regards ...
