I have win98 1st edition and a win98se update CD....i have to install with win981e before installing win98se again when i reformat my drives. any way i can bypass the win981e 1st install and just install win98se with the update CD?

It should be possible either to boot from the Win98SE CD, or download a boot floppy with CD support to run setup.exe on the SE CD.

This works with most versions of update CDs; of course you will need your 981E disk to hand for authentication.

If You mean win98se upgrade the answer is no, the upgrade disk is not bootable. (tried it several ways and no go)

If you already have the original version installed just boot up and insert the upgrade CD. It should autostart into an upgrade mode. If no operating system is installed, then just follow StrangerStill's instructions: "Download a boot floppy with CD support to run setup.exe on the SE CD", then at some point during the install the process will ask to insert the CD that has the "full install" to verify that you are meeting the licensing rules.

It's actually better, if possible, to do a straight install rather than upgrade; less old junk.

Actually, come to think of it, you should be able to use the 981E floppy with the SE CD.

Along the same lines as HaroldW's reply:

Win98/Win98se install (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70464)

At least with MS products, it almost always works (MS Office, Project, Etc...)
