This is becoming a real pain. I have windows cd-player, Gateway cd-player, Napster MP3-player on my system, and MVP2000 mgr trying to grab the player(cd-player asscoc has been set off). You put a cd in the cd-rom and Gateway player takes control(they say it's the default when you install). You click on a Napster MP3 track(it has it's own media player) and it doesn't work. You click on windows player and nothing happens.
Why can't there be a simple method to select which cd-player, media player, etc. to use? I just downloaded winamp, but I'm afraid to install because of all the other existing problems.
Does anyone have a recommendation or any thoughts? This was fine until we started to burn cd's, then every piece of software seems to want complete control. Gettin' ticked!!

You could turn your cd players auto-run feature off in device manager(then you can pick the player), but you might get more buffer underrun when you write cd's(unless you write to the HDD first).

When you put Winamp on he will associate files too but you can choose which to or not associate. Just go to preferences (in Winamp) Ctrl+P -> File Types. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

It seems that thru a slow process of elimination that the culprit may be either newly loaded Adaptec or my newly loaded sound drivers from gateway2000. I was trying to get current with all the upgrades and updates, and since it was raining all last weekend, I decided to do it then. And that's when I noticed problems occuring.
The cd-player is fine-gateway has a lock on it. But if you want to click on a wav file or realplayer, it tells me the audio/media player is in use by something else, which tells me something has it locked up. Haven't been able to find that yet, that's why I need the help. Please!!

The only way I would think to do it and it works on my machine is to open every player,go to options and uncheck every file type but the individual players file type.Windows gets windows media formats, real gets real formats etc. Then go to the one that you want to play .cda(CDs) .wav, mp3 etc. and check those boxes.Open up the gateway interface and uncheck all the boxes if you don't want to use it.
I have MVP do most of the sounds & all .cda 'cause I like the way that playlist works and the player runs, and it does a direct mp3 to disk burn. So you can create a mp3 playlist ,listen to the the playlist and push a button and burn the playlist, all from the little mvp thingy. I use infanview for .avi,.mov,etc- visual formats,so I take those away from all the players.

Yeah, I can change those associations(I think). All, but the Gateway one, which won't let me get to it because the install was a straight driver upgrade and when I play a cd is the only time it pops up on screen(with no options or properties box available), or I just don't know how.
But the process of elimination has worked before. Thanks.
