okay,

i have two floppy drives, one from a 386 machine and one from a 486 compaq. when i try to hook them up the light is on all the time, it never flashes. it won't read anything. I've tried them on several different machines. I have also tried as many different cord combinations as i can think of.

any ideas. also please look at the next message. thanks in advance.

Are you trying to use both in the same pc? If so, enable the second floppy and sharing in your bios.

yes, i've tried to use both, and each at a time, but i either get nothing or the light stays on all the time. i've tried to change as many things in the bios as i could think of.

How does BIOS report them, as there and 1.44mb? You may have to "enable" them, or "Press 3 to detect all drives" as in some BIOSs'.
What is the mfg, number, and date of mfg ?

then
During POST, press "pause" and check info.

Does "My Computer" show them as OK ?

I'm not sure if the power or flat cable can be reversed. On most of mine they are tabbed.

If the drive light is on all the time that's a sure sign that the data cable is reversed. The side with the red stripe on it should go to pin 1 on the motherboard and the drive. Turn it around and give it another shot.
