i think i need a new rom, the one i have won't play any game that has safedisc2. (yes they are the original cd's) if you guys or gals think that is the problem, what is a good cdrom that i can buy that will read safedisc2?

thank you

Yeah, ok, so I'm gonna sound pretty dumb here, but what is safedisc2? Is that one of the copyright measures in place on newer games and such. I remember one of the first anti-copying measures was to put in files that had longer filenames than the Joliet naming system (64 characters i think? or 80?). If this is another type, how does it work?

SD2 is a copy protection scheme that is designed around bad sectors on the medium.

Go to www.cdspeed2000.com

browse the list, see what you need (data/access/dae) and decide.
All new CDROMS read SD2.

Otheos is absolutely correct. Only thing I can add is: buy a CD drive which meets your requirements. For example, I don't mind if its slow. I need the flexibility and convenience of an external USB drive (Acer). You have to decide on these parameters yourself. Dude, all drives are excellent and very reliable nowadays. Though most folks say Plextor has an edge.
