The last statement in your post was "How does this(atapi) CD-RW connect to the Asus mobo.
It connects just like a harddrive, but besure that you don't put a PIO-# device and a UDMA/## device on the same channel. It's all in how the device reads/writes in timming, the method it uses. You can do it but the pio device will have problems and fail after continued use.
