Then why aren't we goin nuts over this Boston Globe article (http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/262/oped/Sticky_questions_for_the_elite+.shtml)? Is it because some communist, I mean liberal, I mean journalist wrote it? Why isn't this guy getting grilled? Oh, I forgot, the media doesn't go after itself. After all, the poor opressed soul of this journalist was only trying to report the truth (or what he felt was true, which is all that matters anyway, right?). The media is quick to go after leaders (liberal and conservative alike, but mainly conservative and much more visciously for the latter as well) for what they say. This is not a time to cast a shadow of doubt over the American way of life; it's a time to come together and get through this as one nation. What this guy has to say is just sickening.
God cannot be all that happy with a nation that is 5 percent of the world's population, produces a quarter of Earth's carbon dioxide emissions, yet walks out of global warming talks.
WHAT A FREAKIN LOAD OF DOOKIE STICKS!!! (Way to avoid foul language Mr. G.... thank you, thank you) What's worse, is that people actually are willing to believe that BS. I understand that people are looking for things to blame, but this is just crazy. It sounds to me that the journalist is trying to justify the terrorists actions, which just makes me want to puke all over him. This kind of finger-pointing goes beyond the level of shameful.

What he's trying to point out is that America is seen as the world's glutton. In many ways, he's right.
We really do have lousy foreign policy. Always have. That said, though, I don't feel we should be too ashamed of having what we have. It's the American way of life, our political system (even with all its faults), our economic system, our freedom of speech, our freedom of religion, our ability to overcome adversity, and most importantly, OUR LONGSTANDING WILLINGNESS TO ALLOW IMMIGRATION, that gives us the ability to do what we do. True, we should review our foreign policy and be more generous and outward looking, but other countries should review their domestic policies and see what makes them unable to achieve our standard of living. We may be the world's leader in many things both good and bad, but we lead by example. Don't point the finger of blame at us when you're hanging people in your own country for practicing a different religion or for speaking out against a government which has failed them. When religious zealots with the IQ of houseplants take over a country, it's going downhill fast. No way around that.
This reporter should ask how much foreign aid have we provided poorer countries that never made it to the folks for whom it was intended. How many leaders of these countries lined their own pockets with cash meant to feed the hungry people outside the palace?
This reporter should also look at his Norway example. Norway is oil rich and has draconian immigration policies. They have a virtually homogenous and comparatively small population. They can afford to be generous. It isn't the people of Norway who are giving away this money, it's the filthy rich government. Now, before I get flamed by those of Norwegian lineage, let me say that I admire the Norwegian goverment's generosity and applaud their goodwill, but comparing their largess with that of the US is unfair.
What I'd really like to see is for folks to stop blaming God for this!!!!!. This was an act of terrorism, perpetrated by psychotic animals. And if Osama so-to-be-laid-to-Rest has so much money, why isn't he using it to help those poor, underdeveloped countries instead of starting a war that will make them poorer?

What's worse, is that people actually are willing to believe that BS.
There are many of us that don't fall for their line of ****. And if that were a "legit" news article I'd willing to let loose the dogs on him. But he does have a right to his opinion (no matter how "F'ed"-up it might be). Note that the article is on the EDITORIALS/OPINIONS page of the pager. That one of the few places in a "news" paper where you should see biased material.
What he's trying to point out is that America is seen as the world's glutton. In many ways, he's right.
I think not. I don't think the 'facts' he presented are correct in their individual assumptions anyway.

I stand by my point, BBA, we do comsume a disproportionate amount of natural resources.
HOWEVER, if we suddenly all went out and bought hybrid cars and scrapped the SUV's, and our oil consumption dropped by 50 or 60%, do you think the rest of the world would buy up all the oil we didn't consume? I don't think so. Think how much money wouldn't go into the world economy. Think what that would do to the economies of the world's oil-producing nations.
The simple truth is that the world's economy is driven by oil. First and foremost. If someone suddenly found a way to cheaply replace oil (and managed to get it to market without the oil interests burying it) the world's economy would self-destruct. Norway wouldn't be giving away $285 per capita, that's for **** sure. The oil-rich OPEC nations would crumble. The country which owned the patent on the oil replacement would be in a position to dominate the world economy.
Yes, America consumes a large proportion of the world's resources, but we pay for it!!!!.

I don't see how our gluttony should affect our pending actions. Innocent people have been killed, from the so called 'elite' to tree-hugging new-age hippies that may have been in the buildings. It didn't matter to our attackers that there were women and childeren in those buildings. What does the death of innocent people have to do with how much carbon dioxide we produce? I just think this guy is trying to misdirect our anger to his own personal agenda. God help us all if it works.
M_Six...if we all went out and bought hybrid cars, the oil consumption would go UP! They are only more efficient at using the fuel they are equiped with...but it takes more oil to produce those fuels.
