I just want to post my avg download rate - I am on the @home service with Rogers in TO - I avg under 20Kbs second and that sucks - I would like other (would be subscribers) to beaware of the reality of cabel - Since all promotion for these services leads one to thing they will get downloads in MB's (NOT)...Yes I have tweeked my registry, my NIC settings, etc with no real improvement
My neighbor reports the same slow connection as well...

tomcda: If i were in your shoes I would be upset to ! sometimes I get slow downloads but thats not often, I usually average around 40k or more depending on the traffic at a particular site. and sometimes i get downloads that are crazy like say 50mgs in under 2 min, so i can't complain, buy the way i am with access cable in sackville NS. start complaining i would.
Most cable modems are rate provisioned by the service provider. You should call them and find out the set limit they use. I sometimes get really low download rates also, but it depends on the web site, because I can get really high rates sometimes too.
What pings do you get in games like Quake2?
Most 2-way cable modems get between 15-30 on most local servers, and most one way modems get between 80-140 on local servers.

Ah, the complaints begin. I was wondering when I would see problems with cable modems. Could this be a symptom of too many users sharing the same bandwidth? I have problems with my DSL line, but only that my ISP has trouble keeping a route to the internet open. My download speeds have been on the low side for DSL (topping out at about 80k) but they have remained the same ever since I got the line. I may be moving to a new provider soon that will give me a CIR of 300 or 500k bandwidth. Not many cable modems or DSL links actually come with more that 0k Committed Information Rate these days. Heck, I know T1 providers that can't guarantee bandwidth.

I live in Toronto to and also have the Rogers @home cable modem. When I first got it, I was averaging about 70-100 Kb/s. Now I only get around 40-60 Kb/s. Buy the way my highest transfer rate is 721 Kb/s, but I forgot what site I was at.

I hate my cable modem, no one else in my cable modem area even have a computer (well, at least not Keyboard and mouse type, but lots of those TV top things. But those run through phones) I do have a buisiness man type guy next door, I bet he has a laptop, but everyone else is like 90-110, old ville. My cable modem runs maximum of 200K dirrect from a t3 server with like no trafic. They advertised on the bill board, "100x faster than a modem" perhapse if the modem is off! Is this a 2k modem? On the web site it said that it was never under 500k if no one else was around, but 200k is rare.

Jeez, where are you guys located? Out here in Fort Worth I get on average 250kbps for web browsing, and around 200-400kbps from my newserver. In fact, the other day I downloaded from zdnet and the thing surged up to 1200 kbps and stayed there till the file was fully received! I use net-medic to monitor and watch the thing pretty closely. But it may be because I'm the only one on my node, I live in a pretty run-down neighborhood. Also I'm about 2 blocks from one of the cable company's buildings not sure if that might be a big factor.

i don't have cable at home may be i can help.
fist these probs may arise due to some USERS http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif who don't configure their home networks properly. they just plug the modem to the hub and let the whole internal traffic leak out.
second somebody may misuse ur local network, do a heavy downloads (eg lots of video) or downloads (audio conferences-- remember down-up pipe is much more narrow).
third the provider can misconfigure it's own hardware. there are not so many pros at cable co's yet.
in any case u'd better press on thechies there may be they want to show you their graphs. and u may want to read some echoes at msn for example there are many of poor guys.
sorry if it deasn't help.
