Please recommend a good and inexpensive external CD/RW and if possible suggest where I can buy it :-)

Externals are just internals stuck in a special box. USB can't work faster than 4x. You might want to try a firewire.

Actually, Acer has a USB model that claims to be able to achieve 6X on USB 1.0, not the new 2.0 version. I sincerely doubt that it hits that mark very often, however, and I've never been a big fan of Acer products. But it does also alow connections on multiple interfaces: USB, Firewire, and PCMCIA.

Anyway, is this external drive going to be for just one machine, such as a laptop? Or do you plan on moving it from box to box. If you're looking for speed, firewire will probably be the cheapest to set up connections on each machine, so you don't have to remove and install a firewire card every time you move the drive. SCSI won't be all that far behind in cost, and in fact if you get lucky, you might be able to configure it less expensively. And lastly, if speed isn't an issue and you don't want a big hassle, just go USB (as long as all your boxes have Win98 or later).
