It couldn't happen to me...........well it did.

I had (notice had) a 1.3G Athlon, with a Coolermaster EP5 6I11 heatsink, it all worked fine at 1.33 (133FSB).

Then, like a fool, I went to a computer show where they had a Thermaltake Super Orb at a good price, so I bought it, modified it and fitted it, all OK. It didn't work any better than the Coolermaster depite its two fans, and all its noise, idle temp about 30deg, full load about 50deg.

A friend asked me to build a new PC, so I sold her the Thermaltake and re-installed the Coolermaster............nowt (nothing), no boot, fans run up, HDD spins, CD spins, no video, no beeps, nuffin.

Removed the HS and the Arctic Silver and if you look carefully there is a chip, hard to believe that could kill a CPU, but it looks like it. :(

I know you have seen this before, but look how small the chip is.

I may try to get the vendor to replace it, what do you think??

How do I drill it ?? :), second thoughts, no lets not get into that again !!

Why are Orbs allowed on the market if they cause damage like that?

Yup no matter how careful you are it's a major feat to install a heatsink on one of these!
I've got one just like yours sitting here in front of me as a reminder to go Intel the next time.

Sorry dude I know the feeling!!!

What a drag! Sorry to hear of your loss. Let this be a reminder to those who are considering getting an ORB. Don't. There are better, comparatively priced HSF's.

I agree. The Athlon processor die is just to fragile to take the chance. I hear the palamino die is a bit more durable. I don't know if it's coated with a protected layer or if it has to do with it's more square-like shape, but I hope that's the case. I say if you're gonna kill a processor, do it the right way: Burn it up overclocking it!!!

Don't feel bad.

My cousin asked me to look at his system. It turned out the CPU was bad because A) someone forgot to remove the red plastic covering the thermal conductive material preapplied to the heatsink B) I learned that the CPU was accidentally dropped before installation.
