I don't know the currency rate for Australian Vs. U.S. Anyhow, I'm going to suggest a Plextor 12/10/32 CDRW drive... You can buy one at price watch for as low as $129 USD...

129USD would be 258AUSD, right, Hellmund ? :)

Check out Teac CD-W512EB, 12/10/32 burned with Burn-Proof, or the new one CD-W516EB, 16/10/40 ...

Best Regards ...

Whats wrong with Acer, dudes? I have one for $99 and connects to the USB port. Its external. Ok, so its a bit slow (4X write) but very reliable, rugged, and good looking. Have burnt around 300 CDs with it so far and works like a dream. Plus, the flexibility of USB means its plug and play, I have an extra slot for a DVD/CD/HDD. And, best of all its cheap. No, sorry, value priced!!

Acer products are really kinda inferior compared to other brands. I guess you're one of those lucky few who never had a problem with their products. :)

Sub_Seven: The TEAC writer is a good brand, you won't regret getting writers of that brand. Sony's pretty good too, I guess. Though Plextor is the best. But Plextor is quite expensive. :)

Plextor is the way to go. Any of their drives are nice. The newer do have the burnproof. Dont know how I lived without it :)

I have a Plextor 12/10/32S (S for SCSI) but also a Plextor CD-ROM 40max SCSI for CD-to-CD. Works perfectly. Reading the posts from various forums, I would say that Plextor come top of the list or very close to it. The same goes, I guess, for ATAPI drives. Others may suggest alternative brands worth considering.

Sure, plextor is the best but also the most expensive. My startegy: Go for a reasonable one at a cheap price and upgrade regularly since the technology changes so fast. Believe me in 2 years time no one will use CDRW/CDRs. They'll go the way the floppies/zip disks went. It'll be rewritable DVDs.

My philosophy is to determine the best under a number of conditions, e.g., price, quality, and reliability. Once I have a piece of hardware – this goes for software to – that I have my eye on I find it at the cheapest price possible even if it means waiting. For example, Plextor’s CD-RW 12/10/32S has been out for some time now but I have only just purchased it in the past two months.

Plextor’s are more expensive but I would rather pay more for something that worked exactly how it is meant to. This does not mean that other CD-RW drives do not (this should eliminate any rebuking).

G and his Plextor’s are a happy threesome.

I've been running my Acer CDRW4432A for about 2.5 years now with absolutely no problems. It's quiet, runs cool, and hasn't made a coaster since I figured out that Nero works better than Adaptec.:D

I don't really know if I want to go to a faster burner, considering the heat that those things will generate inside the case.:(

Actually, all CD writer are good. The technology is mature now and in any case there are only a handfull of manufcaturers in the world who actually manufacture CD writers. Just like hard drives: all are approximately equal.

So, just go for the best deal you get: value for money. Do you really want a drive which will last like 6 years?
