My mom said if i save up $200 (ive got 120 already!) she would spend $800+my $200=$1,000 on a new computer for me at Christmas. What is a very (non slow) powerful computer i could get for $1,000??

Do you need a monitor?

Ok, here is what I came up with:

$ 75 Case & 300W PS
$119 AMD Duron 700 CPU
$159 128MB PC100 Ram
$ 45 56K Modem
$179 Asus A7V Motherboard WOA
$249 GeForce DDR
$ 52 Samsung 52X CDROM
$139 Seagate Barracuda 20.4GB 7200RPM HD
-----------------------------
$1017 W/out Tax

Or, it is $1256 With a 17" Monitor.

Tell me if ya want Intel instead, meanwhile, I will be making a cheaper system......

-edit-

The next system I design will be a Celeron II system http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

$139 Seagate Barracuda 20.4GB 7200RPM HD
$52 Samsung 52X CDROM
$249 GeForce DDR Video Card

I don't think Dell can beat that home grown system. Sure, you could go the "L Series" route, but I've had that and I didn't like it. ONE 5 1/4" expansion. THAT sucks. I had an onboard video card.

I just got a "4100 Series" comp. It kicks bootay. BUT it cost $2100 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Just a little over BTT's budget http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

It looks like you have a couple of months to decide.

Do you want to build this yourself or buy one built? What are you going to use it for, gaming, internet? Do you need a bunch of hard drive space, like for MP3's? 2 hdds? CDRW & DVD?

Ok, Blind to Truth, You say you have a 21'' monitor already, which is great, what else do you currently have in your system, could dramatically decrease the cost of your system if you upgrade ( If you currently have good stuff).... List your current setup so that we can tell you what to eliminate....

brandon184
09-05-2000, 08:19 PM
Well, I've had a look around and come to the conclusions...

- 64MB should be enough for most computing needs. An upgrade when memory prices are lower is possible.

- An *16MB* video card is sufficient for everyday needs, and is even pretty good for gaming.

- A 20GBhd could be put in, instead of the 10 gigger, moving the price from $969 to $1050.

The cheapest way to upgrade would be to replace mb and cpu, additional ram, harddrive.

brandon184
09-05-2000, 08:47 PM
Win_98.. Then what would be the point? Your suggestions are pretty much the same as ours. You are just suggestion that he keeps his case.

hahaha!! Good job, Brandon!

BUT I do have to sorta disagree with you http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif. I think 64mb RAM is JUST BARELY enough for today's stuff. My dad's comp has that much. I just ordered 64 more for his Christmas present while the price is right. He does some minor photo stuff w/Photo Impact and it really puts along.

I've seen 64mb doubled to 128mb and tripled to 192.

It will speed things up, as you said. But it won't make your machine blazing fast at anything.
