system resources at 51%

When I first boot my system my resources are about 80% and in about 15 min thy are down to 50 % Even when I dont have much running. I' ll shut every thing but this window down and report what it says then. Now it reads 56 % and my hard drive is clicking away like its in use, and as I'm typing I have to wait a couple of seconds for the letters to get on the screen. It's like I'm using an old tandy computer. Can ony one help me with these problems? Also, my hard drive still runs when I shut down. I even e-mailed this problem to the manf. of the hard drive and they think it's a virus. I've got Norton on the system now and it fixed the problem for 2 shutdowns and it went right back to not stopping the hard drive on shut down. I had Magfee on here before and it did not do any thing.

Do you have any file swapping programs running?

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and tell us what is listed.

Go to the Start menu, click on run, then type MSCONFIG in the box, hit enter key, when you get the screen up for msconfig , at the top click on STARTUP tab you will then see the programs or files that Windows is starting up some of which will not be reported if you hit alt, control, delete keys. Click all the check marks to remove them, the only one you need is (system tray) make certain you leave this one selected or other wise you won't have a task bar at the bottom (or Top) of your screen. Make certain the selective start up box is checked on the main screen.
Reboot your system and check to see what your resources are, if there is an improvement you can check them back on one at a time to see which one is hogging all your resources. Good Luck!

Willard, that's not that unusual. I'm at 43% right now. No big it works, and I play quake just fine (well the computer does).

What happens is when you boot win will suck up about 20% right off the bat. then you have things like zone alarm and anti virus, 1 or 2 messenger progys etc etc, and eeeek, it looks like your resources are being sucked dry. don't worry till about the 30% mark, then reboot. if your really up set about it, disable some of the things that start up automatically with Winderz. :)
